E3 ’09: Borderlands, Bioshock 2, and Mass Effect 2
Here’s a teaser trailer for my dark-horse game of the year, Borderlands. Between the RPG and FPS elements, mixed with driving and exploration segments, with lots of loot and weapons, and a heavy co-op focus, this game looks great. Oh, and the unique visual style is just gravy.
And here’s a trailer for BioShock 2, which pretty much shows us nothing new. This game really didn’t have the showing I was hoping for at E3.
And Mass Effect 2, looking even Mass Effect-ier.

God I hate the Asari. Hopefully my decision to let the Council die and Humanity take its rightful place at the head of the government sticks through into the sequel.
You should see the Mass Effect forums on GameFAQs. There’s actually a fair amount of people that play the game as female Shepard. Am I wrong, or is that strange? It would feel totally out place. Look at that badass. That’s the guy on the cover of the damn game. AND on the spine… err… side? Is it called a spine for a Video Game case? Whatever.

Did you play as stock shephard or make your own? I made my own, but whenever i think of shephard I think of the stock version.

Oh I played stock. Soldier and all. Even my subsequent replays were all using the same model (though different classes, naturally).

Yeah, the character editor wasn’t bad and the guy I made actually looks fine in all the cut-scenes and like he belongs, but I think the trailers just leave such an impression that stock shephard is the only true shephard. I think I might play stock in ME2…well, there’s that whole character transfer…I might do one character transfer and then do an all new game as well. I just feel like I’m going to be playing ME2 more than ME1.

I have a suspicion that the character transfer is going to be nothing more than a gimmick. There’s no way they could take the time and care to make your decisions (particularly the last one) actually relevant and pervasive in the sequel.
I mean – I guess it’s possible… but sequels that draw off games that are based around choices (KOTOR 2, the Fallout series) generally just make one ending canon and give the finger to everything else. As I understand it, the Mass Effect devs have specifically tried to make this not the case – that is, the story of ME1 is just what you make of it. We’ll see though.
