Reactions: This is what DLC should be
It’s no secret that I’m not the biggest advocate of downloadable content, but the way in which Bethesda has handled Fallout 3‘s DLC is simply phenomenal. The fact they’ve put out five reasonably sized packs in a timely fashion, all within nine months of release is reason enough to praise them, but now they’re expanding the game’s fiction and setting with the Mothership Zeta DLC. I mean, who would have thought you’d be fighting aliens with ray guns in outer-space the first time they played Fallout 3? But the evolution makes perfect sense and doesn’t break the game at all, especially since it’s DLC. I want to see more companies follow Bethesda’s lead. Look for Mothership Zeta on August 3rd.

Most hardcore fans of the Fallout series are actually very upset with Bethesda for this move (among other design choices they made in Fallout 3). Having gone back, purchased and beaten Fallouts 1 and 2, I feel I’m qualified as well to be an elitist on this series much as I am about the Elder Scrolls.
However, despite my qualifications, I’m actually not that upset about it. Basically the complaint is that throughout the history of the series aliens have been nothing more than an amusing easter egg and should have remained that way. I don’t really agree with that. From the very first game (that included an Alien Blaster) onward there has been evidence of aliens… so it makes sense to finally ‘canonize’ their presence and give explanation.
That’s my feeling on the matter. Who is this directed at? I don’t know. The subject at hand here though, DLC, I definitely agree. The FO3 DLC in my opinion has been the best handled DLC for any game on the 360 so far; they’ve really shown what lessons they learned from Oblivion. More than that, I feel the quality has improved with each and every release – which makes me very excited for the fifth and final installment on monday.
