Reactions: Infinity Ward passing on MW3, working on new IP?

Rumor has it that Infinity Ward is moving on from the Call of Duty franchise after eight years in order to work on a brand new IP for Activision. Said rumor also suggests that the newly minted Sledgehammer Games could be taking on development of Modern Warfare 3.
Sledgehammer has said in recent months that they’re working on a “new game based on one of Activision’s existing franchises.” Making the rumor even more likely is the fact that the studio is currently hiring lead online multiplayer designers who must have at least “five years experience working on current AAA multiplayer shooters for current consoles and PC.” Lastly, with Activision’s other Call of Duty studio, Treyarch, already working on Call of Duty 7, which is rumored to be a Vietnam-era game, the mega-publisher would have to bring in a new studio to keep up the franchise’s annual output. Sledgehammer is a studio with the pedigree to take on such an important franchise.
As you may know, that pedigree comes from the new studio’s two founders, Glenn Schofield and Michael Condrey–the primary forces behind EA’s acclaimed Dead Space. But besides the reputation, Sledgehammer hasn’t actually put any games out yet.
This is all firmly in the realm of rumor at this point, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see it turn out to be true. To me, it sounds like a win-win. Infinity Ward, an undeniably talented studio that”s probably been making the same kind of game for too long, gets to branch out and apply their experience and skills to a brand new property. Let’s hope that whatever it is, it doesn’t involve shooting terrorists. And on the other side of things, some very creative minds at Sledgehammer get to spice up one of the most revered franchises in gaming. Sounds good to me.

I agree…I would be pretty tired of making the same kind of game again and again. I just hope that the masterminds of Infinity Ward can come up with another great franchise.
And I do hope that Sledgehammer can bring the same level, or greater, product that IW has been able to do.

On a completely unrelated topic, Anthony Scheel or whatever his last name is stopped into Walmart last night and told me that your sister flew back here to visit a friend and that he’s been hanging out with her because she’s friends with one of his friends or something like that. I just thought you should know this very creepy fact.

I did learn about that…and I have been quite scared for my sister.

He actually said that she looked kind of hot. You should probably fly back here and beat him up.

Very stupid business decision. I can all but guarantee that MW2 will be “the last of the good ones,” and whatever IF goes on to do, if it’s anything NEAR a FPS, will constantly be compared to MW and MW2 and denegraded for not measuring up.
Made more stupid by the fact the game so clearly led into a MW3. My own thought is that they should’ve finished their own trilogy and then moved on, leaving the MW series complete.

I think you’re kidding yourself if you believe Activision will allow the Modern Warfare series to stop at 3. They’ll keep it up for as long as WWII shooters were popular. And as an IW employee, I’d be really sick of working on realistic war FPS’s after 8 years.
Modern Warfare 3 will still sell the most units to date, regardless of IW’s departure. Most of the people who play those games don’t even know who IW is. So why wouldn’t Activision allow their best studio to go develop a new AAA franchise for them?

Well, for starters, they WON’T get another AAA franchise out of IW. But more than that, as an IW employee, I would have preferred the opportunity to finish the story I began with Soap and Price. If, after their story is told, some chumps want to take the tag “Modern Warfare” and do things with it, by all means.
Here’s my prediction. IW will either try something drastically different from MW and it will SUCK because they’re better suited to make a game like MW, or they’ll try and make another FPS and it will SUCK because people will realize they’d be better suited playing MW.

Why do you assume they couldn’t make an FPS just as good, or better than MW in a different universe? If anything, IW’s lust for insane set-pieces and Hollywood action is better suited to a a realm not bogged down by the expectations of realism.

It’s like – you discover you’re great at playing the piano. You could pursue it, or just put it out of mind and pick up a flute.
You have your prediction, I have mine.

Flawed analogy. IW isn’t leaving video game development for movie development or anything like that, they’re just working on a different IP. It’s more like discovering you’re great at piano and deciding whether or not you want to play more than one symphony.

Not a flawed analogy. Last I checked, a piano and a flute are both musical instruments. An individual symphony would be akin to an individual game. A franchise’s style would be more like an instrument or maybe a particular style, if that’s easier to grasp. Similar to if I make a succesful living writing techno music but then suddenly switch to country.
