Reactions: Elder Scrolls MMO looking likely

Just think of the micro-transaction possibilities!
We should have seen it coming. First Final Fantasy, thenKnights of the Old Republic, now The Elder Scrolls. It looks as if the traditional single-player RPG is fading into oblivion. Damn you, World of Warcraft!
According to GameSpot, the notion of an Elder Scrolls MMO has moved out of the realm of pure rumor and has some evidence to back it up. A December 29th preliminary injunction hearing between Zenimax (parent company of Bethesda) and Interplay over the Fallout license dug up some interesting non-Fallout facts.
Namely, the knowledge that Bethesda has “tens and tens of millions of dollars” and “close to a hundred people” wrapped up in making a “World of Warcraft”-style MMORPG that they’re trying to keep on the QT. The report also specified that the game in question is not part of the Fallout brand. From there, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Bethesda’s only other marketable license is The Elder Scrolls, unless of course they plan on risking all this money on a new IP. The project reportedly began in late 2006, with work entering full production in 2007. Development was scheduled for four years.
British gaming news site VG247 also supports the rumor, claiming to have been “very reliably informed” that the project is an Elder Scrolls MMORPG. The site’s source reportedly claimed that Bethesda had initially planned to announce the game in 2009 but that the reveal was canceled for an undisclosed reason.
Why won’t anybody just let me play my RPGs in solitude? I honestly believe that World of Warcraft is doing more damage to the industry than good. It steals sales from other games, lures publishers into pumping more games into an already saturated genre, tricks developers into lazily copying a money-printing, yet rather boring template, and locks gamers into a static prison where they feel no need to expand their horizons. We need to destroy this poisonous beast!

Not to mention the lives that are destroyed because of WOW and all the time and money spent playing it.

I kind of made my peace with this when it was speculated at because it seemed terrible enough to be true… It’s really strange because – as much as a I love the Elder Scrolls lore and world – there is no way in hell I’m playing it online. 95% of the fun factor in those games is spent alone, marveling quietly at the landscape or rummaging through a book you found on the shelf. Really a damn shame. Looks like Oblivion will be the last of the good ones.
At least I still have new Fallout games staying offline… for now.

Yeah, for some reason I have zero interest in playing this online. I mean, I don’t like MMOs, but at least The Old Republic has me intrigued. Must be the thought of fraternizing with fellow Star Wars nerds.
