Our Adventures: Season premier of Lost Season 6

Well, now, that was some entertaining television! Consider this a scattered, initial-reaction sort of musing on the two hour opener, and something that I hope to do for every episode from here on out. After last season, when my obsessive researching of the IMDB Lost boards kept me a little too well informed, I won’t be risking the potential to spoil any of my viewing pleasure over there. So while these posts may not have the low down on the latest theories and analysis, I hope to just give my thoughts and pose some of my own questions. I really hope you guys join in on the ponderings with me. But without further ado, my thoughts on “LA X” parts 1 and 2.
First of all, this branching story-structure they’ve presented is keeping my enthralled, even though I wish each of the three story arcs got more equal attention. I get the feeling that we won’t know what’s going on with the alternate universe stuff at least until mid-season, if not longer. And how does Juliet know it worked? Is her mind in two different places, sort of like Desmond’s was in two different time-lines back in season 4? And what was that that she asked Sawyer about getting a cup of coffee sometime? Did she not recognize him at first, but then she did? Questions that Miles couldn’t answer…maybe Hurly can though?
But yeah, it was really cool to see the Losties both on the Island and in LAX. Jack seemed to know what was up, or at least it looked that way. Nobody else did, however. And wtf was up with Desmond on the plane!?! Was he really there? Rose and Bernard couldn’t vouch for him. And that whole “another lifetime” line takes on a pretty literal interpretation after an atomic explosion.
But to wrap up my thoughts of those two story arcs, I don’t believe its beneficial for the Losties to be back to their normal lives. The look on Locke’s face at the end of Part 1, where he defeatedly is lifted into his wheel chair sort of sums up what their lives on the mainland are. Although, Jack does offer him his card at the end of Part 2…so maybe things can be good there. Except for Kate, who’s on the run from the law, with Claire and unborn Aaron no less! And Charlie said he was “supposed” to die. Wonder what will come of it.
As for what’s happening on the Island, it was nice to finally see the others, Cindy and the kids included. Although, that Asian guy is a total mind-fuck. Does he live at the temple? Do Ben and Richard even know about him? Why aren’t the others united? And the whole Sayid coming back to life thing? Totally saw that coming. He’s obviously Jacob re-incarnated. There was even some Christ imagery when his arms were spread out in a cross-like shape. And I’m fairly certain that big wooden thing that Asian Man broke was the Egyptian symbol for eternal life. I get the feeling we’ll be seeing a big Sayid-Locke battle at some point this season. Where does that leave Lapidus though? Oh, and please, God…under no circumstances can Kate and Sawyer get back together! That would just spit in the face of the beautiful relationship he and Juliet had.
And then there’s the “Locke” and Ben stuff. It was great to see smokey kick some ass. Bram totally thought he was safe, then BAM! A little ash can’t beat Smokey. I sort of think “Locke” will be running the show for a while, with Ben as the new Richard. I mean, where else does Ben have to turn? “Locke” would seem to be his only ally, even if he is just using him. And I wonder what will become of Richard. I half-expected him to get his neck snapped then and there. Oh, wow, it just dawned on me that Sun and Jin are finally in the same time-line…hmm. But back to Ben and “Locke” (who I’m just going to start referring to as Esau at this point, even though that likely won’t turn out to be his real name). The one thing that makes me doubt Ben becoming the new Richard is the scene where Esau and Ben are talking about the real Locke’s thoughts as he died. Esau was very clearly in the shadows, while Ben’s face was brightly lit by the sun. Could Ben take a stand for good at some point? And where does Widmore play into all of this?
All and all, this was a great episode. It was nice to finally see Cindy, the kids, and the temple, even if all the new (old?) others there raise even more questions. Now we know what was in the guitar case, which sort of implies that Jacob planned to die, so he could inhabit Sayid’s body and go unnoticed by Esau. We know that the bomb worked…sort of. My biggest questions right now, are what the hell is up with under-water Island time? Even if the bomb went off, I don’t see how it would plunge the Island to the bottom of the sea yet somehow maintain Dharma-ville. I’m also really curious as to what’s going on with Desmond. And of course, we still don’t know anything about Widmore, Claire, Aaron, Walt, Charlie (both of them), Christian, Illana, and many more. And how does Eloise feel about all of this? What does she even know? Guess we’ll have to wait ’til next week for some more answers. And I promise I’ll keep it shorter next time.

Wow…I’ve waited 9 months for this magnificent day, and it was pure awesomeness to be able to watch it again. It’s funny…Lost is my favorite show of all time, and yet, I have only probably seen the end of season 2, the beginning of season 3, and the end of season 5 on tv. The rest has mostly been online, or on DVD, after everybody else had seen it.
Anyways, I do agree with Sayid being Jacob. And when Jacob did not fight back when he was being killed, he had a plan, and knew that he had to die to be able to do what he needs to do. And I also noticed the arms spread out…total allusion to death and resurrection.
I’m glad they finally answered the question of the smoke monster…”I’m sorry you had to see me like that”. That was just great.
Now I have a theory (sadly most of them have been wrong, or have not come to light yet). There are these two alternate universes happening of some sort…does this somehow play into the loophole that was talked about by Esau at the end of season 5 (side note, there is some arguments on what he should be called, I first took the Jacob/Esau stance, but most of my friends simply call him “Flocke”, for Fake Locke. And I got so excited when they set him up to say his name, and he never did).
It’s interesting, what Esau/Flocke says about how Locke was the only one who understood their reason for being there (or something to that effect). Most, if not all of their lives, were crappy. Jack was falling apart…probably going to become a drug addict and lose his profession. Kate was arrested. Locke couldn’t walk. Claire was giving up her baby. Charlie was super druggie (and turns out he was going to kill himself), Sawyer killed a man, and probably had no more direction in life. Etc., etc.
I liked how on the plane, Hurley said that he always had good luck…so maybe in this alternate universe, the island never draws them, so they never come upon their runs of bad luck? Or something. I don’t know. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Yeah, I’ve never understood why any of them would want to return. All their lives sucked before. But with Hurly saying that he’s the luckiest man alive, that sort of changes things. Throw in Jack saving Charlie (maybe he’ll go on to get the help he needs now), and Jack giving his card to Locke, and maybe things can be good in this universe. I still don’t know how things could turn out good for Kate though. And Rose still has cancer…or at least I would think she does. Shannon is still in an abusive relationship, Michael and Walt weren’t even on the plane, Jin and Sun are back to a loveless marriage…I just don’t think that universe is good for them at this point in time.
And as for the Jacob/Sayid thing, I’m starting to think maybe it’s a little too obvious. Would the writers of this show really make such an easy connection? Oh, and I’ve always been partial to “Focke.”

Anybody else notice the fact that the imploded Swan station looked much different in last night’s episode than it did in any other season? Here’s a picture for reference: http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/File:Hatch_imploded.jpg

Also, why was Jack’s neck bleeding in the beginning? Or, rather, why was there blood on his neck? He may not have actually been bleeding. Could one universe be bleeding (pun most definitely intended, and perhaps some sort of symbol that the writers used to prove this point) into the other? Jack was pretty bloodied and battered in the other universe, so it would make sense if the two universes were merging together somehow.

I also think it’s interesting that Jack’s the only one who seemed to know what was going on. I doubt Jack’s afraid of a little turbulence in this alternate universe–no, I think he was gripping the seat because he was afraid that the bomb was all for nothing. Or maybe he was at least subconsciously aware, hence the “bleeding” universe theory. It’ll be interesting to see where this goes.

Speaking of Lost. I love how Ben still tried to manipulate Richard at the beginning of the first part by telling him Jacob’s still alive. Classic Ben.

I got the sense that he said that more out of fear than manipulation. Ben’s afraid of Esau and what will happen if he doesn’t obey him. Although I could definitely see Ben making a play for power down the line.
Holy shit! Just thought of a connection. Esau wants to get back “home.” I take that to mean he was cast out by Jacob, sort of like Lucifer was cast out of Heaven. Is it coincidence that Widmore was cast away from the Island by Ben and that he wants to return to get what’s his? Could we be in for a Ben/Jacob vs. Widmore/Esau conflict? Or maybe Jacob’s death will turn the tables and Widmore will be working with Jacob now, while Ben works for Esau. We’ll have to see.
