Our Adventures: Lost – “What Kate Does”

Hello there. Hope you just enjoyed yet another episode of tasty Lost goodness. But let’s get right to it and examine what just happened.
First of all, I was right when I went back on my initial reaction and concluded that Sayid becoming Jacob was too easy of an answer. It now appears that he’s becoming infected with whatever infected Rousseau’s team back when she first arrived. That could make for some very interesting television if Sayid and pals start going through the paranoia that Rousseau’s team did and the inevitable murder attempts that come along with it. And it all makes sense within the fiction as well, as the Smoke Monster led the team down into the temple, where they became infected. We don’t know how they became infected, but Sayid quite clearly got the sickness when he drowned in that nasty brown water (which looks quite similar to the water Ben drained out of the hole hidden in his bedroom in Season 4 when he called the Smoke Monster to fight Keamy’s men).
Speaking of the sickness, how about Rousseau Claire showing up to save Jin? Pretty wild. Definitely wasn’t expecting her to be some crazy jungle girl setting traps for da uddahs. Her character and Rousseau suddenly seem to have a lot of parallels. And I’m just realizing now that Dogan (I think that was the Asian Man’s name) knew about Claire…what’s up with that!?! And is she completely crazy, or is she an agent for Esau? If it’s the latter, then we could finally be seeing the Sun and Jin reunion that we’ve all been waiting for so Sun can stop asking the same damn question in every one of her scenes.
And I guess I’ll just list off the rest of the on-Island stuff since they’re all sort of loose ends.
-Dogan said that he was brought to the Island, just like everybody else. He seemed to have a spiritual/destiny sort of vibe about it as well. Hopefully we’ll get a Dogan-centric episode later on.
-Thought it was interesting that Miles referred to Hurly as the leader at one point. He said it jokingly, but perhaps it has more significance.
-Thought it was great how stupid Kate was chasing after Sawyer supposedly for his help with finding Claire, but we all know she just wants to be with him. But Sawyer experienced true love with Juliet, and he was willing to risk his life just to get some closure with that relationship (that was a terrifically acted scene on the docks). Hopefully Kate’s learned her lesson and will let Sawyer be alone. Which probably means she’ll be running back to Jack, who clearly still has feelings for her but doesn’t believe she would take him back.
-Jack’s back to his old self, for better or worse.
-Disappointing that we didn’t get to see Locke and his crew this time around.
-Was Aldo played by Mac from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia?
-The torturer gets tortured…
-But most importantly in all of this is the fact that Jacob sent Hurly and the gang to the temple knowing that they’d treat Sayid. You’d also assume that being there as long as he has been, and allegedly leading the Others for so long, that Jacob would know his death would result in the water at the temple changing. Okay, so maybe it’s stupid to presume that he should know anything about what would happen after his death, but it just seems like something he should have had an idea about, especially considering he practically orchestrated the arrival of every Lostie through the touch of his hand. If he was aware of what would happen to Sayid, what does that mean?
As for the off-Island stuff, it appears as if everybody’s lives are working out better than initially expected. Claire seems like she might actually keep the baby. Kate still hasn’t been caught and has proved herself to be a good person in Claire’s eyes. Plus, she asked Claire, “Would you believe me if I said I was innocent?” In this alternate universe, where Hugo is the luckiest man alive, maybe she actually is.
-Ethan Rom!
-Artz!
-The bleeding universe theory certainly seems to be gaining more momentum, as more and more characters seem to at least subconsciously recognize their connections with each other. Jack seemed to already know in the last episode. In this episode, Kate looked at him all weird when she saw him as the cab sped away. And then there’s Claire instinctively naming her baby Aaron, and Kate seemingly recognizing the name as soon as she said it.
Well, I suppose that’s it for now. I leave this episode with the feeling that redemption is going to play a major role this season, what with the Jack/Dogan conversation and Kate revealing to Sawyer why she came back. Tying into last week’s musings on Ben/Jacob vs. Widmore/Esau, maybe Ben will get a chance for redemption later this season. Damn…wasn’t Sawyer singing “Redemption Song” on the raft way back in Season 1? He is feeling guilty about Juliet’s death, even though he’s in no way responsible…will he try to redeem himself somehow? Check back next week to see!

I really think I might be onto something with this redemption theory. I mean, that’s sort of the whole point of Jacob and Esau’s conversation, isn’t it? Esau believes that “It always ends the same.” He doesn’t believe in humans’ ability to change what they’ve always done. But Jacob says that “It only ends once. Everything else is just progress.”
Perhaps by redeeming their sins on the Island, our beloved Losties will transcend to the alternate universe that they’re (maybe) directly affecting through their on-Island actions. In the end, their lives will be better for it, and Jacob will be proven right. And then…the screen says “Fin.”

“Was Aldo played by Mac from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia?”
Absolutely. I feel as if we discussed his return before, because I definitely knew it was coming, but perhaps we didn’t.
Kate’s stupid. “Oh, look at me, I’m a stupid bitch who’s gonna hurt these people who are trying to protect me, and then ‘escape,’ even though I’ve really nowhere to go!”
Interesting that Ethan is using his father’s surname this time around.
Oh, and it’s Dogen. Not trying to be condescending, I would have spelled it with an A also, but the spelling’s rather important in the name.
“Despite being written as “Dogen” using the alphabet, the official name is written in Japanese using different characters than those of the name of the Japanese Buddhist philosopher. “Do” itself is written the same way as written in the name of many martial arts (Aiki-do, Karate-do, Ju-do, Ken-do) and means “the way/path of”. Furthermore, according the producers [2] the character plays a role which has both dignity and delicacy as well (this actually refers to the “-gen” part on the name).”

Yeah, not exactly an expert in Japanese spelling. But anyways, I didn’t notice that Ethan used his father’s surname. What is his father’s surname? Is Horace like Cher? Also, we never discussed Aldo. You’re crazy.
Lastly, that was great when Hurly asked Sayid if he was a zombie.

Ethan introduced himself as Dr. Goodspeed. Horace’s last name was Goodspeed. We’ve yet to find out what his mother’s maiden name was though.

I knew I recognized Aldo from somewhere, I just couldn’t my finger on it.
I also realized that Sayid being Jacob was a little too predictable.
I was way excited to see crazy Claire in the end…is there any way for her to become normal again, and get to be with her son, Aaron?
If Hurley is the leader, is that a possible lead-in into him having to sacrifice himself to save everyone?
Did Jacob know that Sayid would become infected? He’s supposed to live, so is he supposed to become crazy like Claire/Rousseau, to help everyone? Will this be the punishment he was expecting when he thought that he would die?
And, something a friend pointed out…the pilot episode, Jack gets two bottles of alcohol from the stewardess, but in LAX part one, Jack only gets one bottle from her. The second bottle was used for his wound. And, how did Jack’s neck get hurt, and why is it significant?

Well, seeing as how Aaron isn’t even on the Island, I’m starting to like my theory that if the Losties redeem themselves through their actions on the Island, then the alternate universe selves will benefit from it. So maybe if Claire does something good on the Island, she’ll get to live a long, happy life with Aaron.
I don’t really think Hurly is the leader, but it was just something that caught my ear. It is sort of interesting that he’s always been the only “good” one of the group. Throughout everything, Hurly has never wanted to hurt anybody and he’s always trying to help others. He’s the only one who felt uncomfortable with lying about the O6 as well.
Whether Jacob knew or not, the infection probably isn’t a good thing if Rousseau’s experience with it is any indication. I don’t think Sayid being crazy will help everyone…that story-line remains to be seen.
The blood on Jack’s neck could have symbolized how the two universes are “bleeding” together, if that theory turns out to be true. Now back I go to BioShock 2.

You know what? I’m sick of you throwing my ideas to the ground and taking a dump on them, and them shoving them in my face.
The same thing with Bioshock 2, and all the monies that you have to buy new games (or rent them, whatever you do).
Hahaha…just kidding.

That’s what I’m here for,
. But for the love of God, I hope crazy Sayid is meant to help the Losties–hilarity could ensue! That just made me think of Season 5 when they gave him acid to force the truth out of him. That was hilarious!
And yeah, my monies and the things I buy with them…you don’t want to know what I do to get those monies. But I do what I have to to satisfy the insane bear who threatens my life every night.

Ryan, have any thoughts/theories on the latest episode? It’d be nice to have more than Al and I in on this conversation. And I’m just going to go out on a limb and assume David doesn’t watch Lost?

I wonder if death has anything to do with becoming infected. Only saying that because Sayid obviously died, and we all assumed that Claire wasn’t exactly “alive” anyway, and she was hangin’ out with Christian. Actually, to be more specific , maybe it has to do with resurrection. Sayid was resurrected, and if we assume that Claire was dead, then she’s been resurrected as well. Only problem is Rousseau, but for being infected, she didn’t seem too affected by it, just crazy, and that’s bound to happen when you spend 16 years alone and have your daughter stolen from you. So, yeah, resurrection could have something to do with the infection. Maybe Focke will be infected too, because, in a way, he’s Locke resurrected. That’s stretching it though. Also, I’m glad you like my bleeding universe theory.

Rousseau was never infected, just her team. So your theory fits with her. But since when are we assuming Claire was dead? She simply disappeared and started hanging out with her dad. I never thought she was dead.

Well, Claire’s death is a theory which I’m assuming for the purposes of my theory. It sort of fits together, but if we don’t assume it, then all I’ve got for evidence is Sayid, and that’s just not enough to build a theory around. So just go with it.
