Reactions: Alpha Protocol goes into effect June 1st

Yup, Obsidian’s first ever original IP will make it’s oft-delayed debut this June, extending the streak of good gaming months in 2010 to six. I know I’ll certainly appreciate a unique new action-RPG that puts me in the role of an international spy during the traditionally lean months of summer. Now I’m just curious if July, August, and December can fill out to make it an entire year of AAA releases. That would probably be a first.

This game will most likely be mediocre.

Thanks for the thoughtful analysis. After all the points you brought up, I think I’ll cross this one off my list.

        A wise decision.

But, seriously, how often has this been delayed? How much actual gameplay footage have we seen? Good questions to ask yourself about the quality of this game, especially when that trailer shows a nice amount of mediocre dialogue and voice acting.

How much actual gameplay did we ever see of ME2? More than this, but not a whole lot more. RPGs simply don’t demo well. I’m basing my excitement on the original premise/setting and the fact that I sort of like Obsidian as developers. And while the dialogue/voice acting isn’t the best I’ve ever heard, I hardly think it’s mediocre. And plenty of other games have faced multiple delays to turn out good in the end.

I certainly don’t think this will be the RPG of the year or anything, but your views on the game seem rather baseless. I don’t know what you’re comparing it to to come up with such negative thoughts.

The crushing amount of disappointing games that come out every year.

Also, that ME2 comparison isn’t really apt. There was plenty of gameplay footage shown for that game (various demos at events demonstrating the dialogue and new combat, as well as gameplay footage for every class), and it was a sequel to an already great game, so I had positive previous experience with the series.

There are bad things in the world so we should assume everything’s bad unless it’s a sequel to a good game?

And ME2 did not show a lot of gameplay. Pretty much the only dialogue it showed was a couple of the “bold” moments because they’re more of a feature than dialogue, which rarely, if ever gets demoed. “Ooh, exciting, people talking about things out of context!”

The class demos were essentially 45 second clips showing off the special power granted to each class.

And the rest of the gameplay footage I can remember involved a fight against a mech and a couple regular skirmishes that showed off the locational hit-detection.

I’ll give you that ME2 has shown more material than AP, but how much material of substance is debatable. At a certain point, showing the same type of video in a different location is just overkill. AP is not a block-buster sequel with a multi-million dollar ad campaign. And for a game that has been delayed so often, it seems wise to not crank up the gameplay videos until a firm release date has been settled.

As for your impressions of ME1 affecting your decision to buy ME2, how are my impressions of Obsidian any different? And your impressions must have failed you anyways, as ME2 has yet to suck you into its core story-line that can’t be longer than 15 hours.

Yeah, I was thinking of that earlier. I agree, but if we don’t start seeing a marketing push within the next couple months, my suspicions will continue.

Your impressions of Obsidian and mine of ME1 differ in that I was gathering my expectations from a game in the same series with the same basic gameplay and story, and unless Bioware decided to do something radically different, I was bound to get something that was at least as good as ME1. Your impressions of Obsidian are based off of one game in a completely different series, that was released 5 years ago. As for your assumption that ME2 has yet to suck me in, please don’t presume to know more about my motivations than I do.

All I know is that you’ve had the best game of 2010 (so far) for about a month now and have only recruited 2 or 3 party members based on your achievements.

And I’m also basing my impressions of Obsidian on their reputation from the Nerver Winter Nights 2 expansions. Still old impressions, but good ones nonetheless.

Speaking of the latest Borderlands DLC, it was actually not too bad. They finally added a boss fight that is worthy of the title, and drops epic lewts. Too much driving though, no fast travel for so much content is sort of inexcusable.

    UMMM

Oh, and regarding this news, I’m gonna have to agree with – DIRECT INTERVENTION IS NECESSARY. IF I HAVE TO DESTROY YOU SHEPARD, I WILL. THIS HURTS YOU. I KNOW YOU FEEL THIS.

Lmao. You always know the right thing to say Harbinger. And as for the new Borderlands content, is the story any good in it?

Not at all. Some laughs but mostly filler. I’d still say the high point was Dr. Ned.

Why don’t developers realize that the best DLC business model is to present an overarching mini-story over 3 or 4 packs? It would give me a reason to actually buy the first pack and then keep buying.

I know I’d love that concept because I buy them all anyway – the only thing is it would alienate people that don’t have the money or interest to keep buying. So say they would ordinarily be interested in buying the 4th installment, but knew they’d be lost without buying 1 through 3, the developer would be out a sale. And that problem would just keep compounding as more installments were added.

I still think it should at least be tried though if only to test marketability of the idea. I know there’s a weird series of Arcade games (maybe 2 or 3, actually) that works with that concept, but as I understand it they suck, and they don’t build off a universe that I already am familiar with, so I’ve no interest there.

I just finished up BioShock’s multiplayer (for now…), and there’s actually a really neat cutscene when you hit rank 40 to tie the prologue angle the MP took in with the beginning of the first game. Makes me miss the first game and its characters that much more… and it makes me think even more that a prologue would have been the best possible angle BioShock 2′s main story could have taken.
