Reactions: Portal 2 officially announced

As if we didn’t see this coming. Here are some details on Valve’s latest, courtesy of GameStop.

Coming this holiday. Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007′s Game of the Year and draws from the award-winning formula of innovative game play, story, and music that earned the original over 70 industry accolades. Features single and multiplayer co-op modes. The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game. The game’s two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.

GameStop also lists October 26th as the current release date. Now I’m all for more co-op games, but this game shouldn’t exist in the first place. I was willing to give BioShock 2 a shot, but Portal is a game that in no way, shape, or form needs a sequel. All the novelty of the first game will immediately disappear in a sequel. Bringing back GLaDOS? Adding multiplayer? Making the campaign longer when the first game was the perfect length for its story? Everything is telling me this game will suck. I hope Valve proves me wrong.

I’m giving this one more of a “meh,” mostly because that’s how I felt about the original. I DO think the co-op could be interesting because the puzzle aspect could be really brutal and actually challenging this time around if it’s done correctly… “a cast of dynamic new characters” is kind of funny, if only because the first game had NO characters outside of what, GLaDOS? And IMO, that’s even a stretch.

I am a little confused though – so is that “new ending” just you getting recaptured after you escape? Kind of makes the whole … y’know, ‘first game’ thing meaningless.
