Reactions: Curt Schilling to bring us a tasty RPG

Well, more accurately, the former baseball great’s 38 Studios (hey, that’s where former GameSpot employee Rich Gallup works!) will be bringing us a cool RPG. Actually, Big Huge Games, which was on the verge of closing down before 38 Studios bought them last year, will be developing the game. The title will be published through the EA Partners program. And just to be clear, this is not 38 Studio’s codename “Copernicus” MMO, but a separate single-player RPG, developed by Big Huge Games, published by EA, and, uh…it has something to do with Curt Schilling because he owns the thing.
Codenamed “Project Mercury,” the game will be an all-new IP co-created by comic-book artist Todd McFarlane (Spawn) and author R.A. Salvatore (The DemonWars Saga). Of more interest to me is the fact that Ken Rolston, lead designer of Bethesda’s Morrowind and Oblivion epics, is acting as the project lead for the new RPG. He’s being assisted by several other Bethesda alumni as well as some Civilization veterans. And if all those names weren’t snazzy enough, we can “expect strong collaboration that would include the BioWare team.”
No release date has been given for this increasingly awesome sounding RPG, but EA Partners general manager David DeMartini did say that the release won’t be competing with any of powerhouse BioWare’s releases. The RPG specialist’s next major release isn’t expected to arrive until Q1 2011, so “Project Mercury” could presumably be hitting stores before the end of this year, but Holiday 2011 is more likely. I just know I’m excited to find out more.

I’m pretty surprised that this story isn’t getting more buzz. Morrowind and Oblivion, people!
