Reactions: OnLive goes live June 17th

I’m just going to go ahead and link the story so you can brush up on what exactly OnLive is and get the details on your own. But pretty much, the video game streaming service is coming to PCs and Macs June 17th for $15 a month. That doesn’t count the games you have to rent or buy, which will supposedly sell for lower than retail prices. The OnLive micro-console that allows for direct streaming to TVs won’t be arriving until sometime later this year, and the launch is only for the continental U.S. at this point. 2011 will see the service provide 1080p, 60fps streaming and the possibility of an international launch. I’m not entirely clear on what service will run at when it launches, but it seems unwise to rush this thing to market when it can’t yet compete with traditional gaming consoles on a technical basis. And charging $15 a month, plus games? That’s $180 a year. The price advantage on consoles seems to disappear pretty quickly considering how long console generations seem to last. But yeah, the concept is cool in theory.

I signed up for the beta last summer, and they finally sent me an e-mail, and are considering me as a tester…so I’ll find out next week if I’m in.
But, unless games are uber cheap, I don’t think that I’ll be getting the service (unless I get a good deal for being a beta tester).
I’m sure in the future, this is really going to take off, even if this one fails right now.

That article I linked was saying something about the first 25,000 adopters getting the first 3 months of fees waived. Maybe you’ll get lucky and save 45 bucks.
