Reactions: Dragon Age 2 landing February 1st?

See that mysterious promotional poster there? The one with two wings, as opposed to Dragon Age‘s traditional one-winged side view. Well, that has some people thinking that BioWare will be gracing us with a Dragon Age sequel a mere 15 months after the first critically acclaimed installation in the franchise. That does coincide with the Q1 release window of the To Be Announced Dragon Age title listed on EA’s most recent financial projections, but many people had assumed that would be a new expansion. But hey, games take less and less time to make these days, so it certainly seems conceivable that BioWare could be dishing out some more RPG goodness February 1st, 2011. At least I hope they are. Oh, and here’s another trailer for Dragon Age: Orgins – Awakening.

Speaking of Final Fantasy XIII – story is good. Characters are good. Linear as all hell – worse than FFX in this regard. Most people pissed all over FFX because it deviated from the world map, free open range airship style and went linear but this one takes it to a whole new height.

I have yet to see a single city I can walk around in, and I’m well into disk 3 (of 3). It’s pretty crap, actually. It’s just fight fight fight cutscene fight fight fight cutscene boss repeat ad nauseam. I will say in spite of this that it’s a very good RPG on its own. Among Square Enix’s most recent productions, it sits on top of them (actually borrows a surprising amount from The Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery in terms of gameplay, and I think a few voice actors…).

I guess what I’m saying is that FFXII was an insult to Final Fantasy fans AND RPG fans, whereas FFXIII is only an insult to Final Fantasy fans… and that counts for a lot in my mind. As an RPG, it has a good story and characters I really care about – and honestly, that’s the most important quality of any RPG, and what was so painfully lacking in XII.

We’ll see though. I’m getting the impression I’ll never see a city in this game – and even if I did, it wouldn’t make up for the entire fucking game without any kind of break from the fighting. No sidequests. No helping out random villagers. It’s just kind of a weird thing, particularly for a series of games that has had some pretty damn memorable cities (Midgar of FFVII, Esthar of FFVIII, Lindblum of FFIX… idk, Zanarkand or maybe Luca of FFX, just to name some of the more recent ones).

Annnyway. I haven’t even beat it yet – I’m actually at a mindless grinding stage atm, so I’ll hold off my comments until later. Is Ryan playing it on his PS3? ARE YA, RYAN?

So it’s like 50 hours of core-quest? Seems like it’d be easy to run out of meaningful story.

You won’t run in to a city. I know this, yet I didn’t buy it. I can’t afford it, and I don’t really have any desire to play it.

Esthar was awesome though, that’s for sure.

Yeah, beat it last night. No cities. Pretty good though, MUCH better than 12. Ranks!!

        IV
        VIII
        X
        VII
        IX
        VI
        XIII
        V

        XII

I (1) really shouldn’t count (although Red Mage is awesome), II I can’t speak towards, and I’ve only played the DS remake of III and I can’t help but feel that turned me off to it.
