Reaction: Alan Wake and Mass Effect 2 DLC news

If you take a long enough break from melting darkness incarnate with your flashlight in Alan Wake and look at its DLC menu, you might notice that the game’s second, and more importantly, unannounced post-release pack, titled “The Writer,” is being advertised. The content looks to put the hard-boiled writer through some grueling trials of some sort, although the 800 Microsoft Points your wallet has to cough up is quite the trial in itself. It’s unclear when “The Writer” will be releasing, but Alan Wake‘s first post-release adventure, “The Signal,” should be coming out in a little over two months.

And in other news, BioWare has been quoted as saying that future Mass Effect 2 DLC will bridge the story gap between the second and as of yet unreleased third installments in the series. Few details were given on the nature of the DLC, but BioWare did say that Kasumi, of the “Kasumi’s Stolen Memory” DLC pack, will be the last party member added through downloadable content. All future questing leading up to Mass Effect 3 will take place with the chums we’ve already made.

As for word on Mass Effect 3 itself, lead producer Casey Hudson said, “it probably won’t be for quite a few months that we talk about Mass Effect 3.” But if it’s any consolation, Hudson did confirm that ME2‘s terrible planet-mining mini-game will be returning in the trilogy’s conclusion. “When you look at the feedback, there are things that people liked about it, and functionally it serves a purpose…I don’t think there’s a problem with any of those. I think it’s the way people relied on it, and the way we relied on it maybe too much in parts of the story. And also just when you think about the speed of it.” Just what I was hoping for.

To be fair, I’d say it accurately captures the excitement of planetary mineral surveying. Also, I’m actually really interested in that bit of DLC news. The ending to ME2 was such that… well, it seemed like it would be best to pick up the final installment essentially RIGHT there. You’d have whatever crew survived with you, and you’d be returning to the council / alliance in the ship you’ve now stolen to inform and kick ass. Not really sure what would go between the ending and that event, or if they’ll make that part of the DLC and ME3 will pick up at some less appropriate point. Huh.

    Oh and, first, RDR.

Second, it would be a good idea for me to buy Alan Wake. Confirm / Deny?

Man, ME2 was such a great fucking game…but anyways. I plan on buying RDR once I beat Alan Wake. I don’t think I’ve played enough of it yet to give you a good idea on whether or not a purchase is a good idea. I like what I’ve played, but I just don’t know if it’s going to be a $60 at the end–it really all depends on the story.

Since I feel like this is our own news story, I’ll ask you here. What was the story of The Force Unleashed? I mean, were you Sith? Were you a Sith, but then you turn against the Sith? I’ve been wondering about that crap. I mean, they have you fighting Imperials, but I thought you were hunting Jedi.

        Wudafuxup?

You’re a super-secret Sith who eventually turns against them. The reason you’re fighting imperials is because you need to maintain the illusion of being a wild card, not Vader’s secret apprentice. Otherwise the Emperor would be making a Sith toast sandwich out of Vader and you. At least that’s my understanding of it. Why do you ask? Wouldn’t it be better to forget that game ever existed?

I’ve been looking for a Star Wars fix lately. I’ve already just about storyboarded a reimagined Star Wars prequel trilogy in my angst. I was hoping that game wasn’t as cliched as it apparently is and maybe it’d fill the void, but clearly it won’t do. I want a game where I can play as the Sith or the Empire because they’re more my style and I HATE fighting them. Somebody should try a Boba Fett game again. That “Bounty Hunter” Jango Fett game was just about the worst thing ever, but I still think the idea has promise.

            *sigh*

Maybe I’ll just dust off the old Battlefront II or KotOR. Those games are only going on like, 5 and 7 years old now.

You could try Empire at War. It just got released on steam. It’s a Star Wars RTS set right before the events of A New Hope. And it’s only 4 years old!

I actually bought this game back in 2007, I think. Didn’t play too much of it. I have an on and off relationship with RTSs, but I remember it seemed pretty fun.

You could also always start up a Star Wars Galaxies account. :D I think the servers are still running on that.

I already own Empire at War :P It was alright. IIRC, the speed during the ground battles was too slow for my tastes when it comes to an RTS… I think that was my main problem. But there were also space battles, and those were awesome. Nothing like watching a fleet of Star Destroyers with TIE Fighters filling the screen moving in on a Rebel base.

I’m gonna have to give SWG the ol’ “etc” treatment. When does that new MMO Old Republic… thing come out?

Old Republic comes out in Spring 2011. You could always buy Republic Commando and tell me if it’s as good as everybody says it was. Or we could just get the gang together and marathon the movies.

Spring ’11 is not Summer ’10… Damn. Was that the PC game where you play as the Clone Trooper squad? If so, I own that too. It was very good, I thought, despite the fact my computer at the time sucked a big one at playing it.

Your second option sounds full of awesome. Of course, I’m not sure who “the gang” is, exactly. Well, beyond the three of us and Tim, I’d imagine. And Tim never seems to have the time (TIM TIME LOLOLOLOL) these days… :’(
