Hey, so I’ll probably have the review up in a couple days, but if you just can’t wait then I’ll save you a lot of heart ache and let you know that Alan Wake sucks and that you don’t want to buy it. I don’t know how I keep getting tricked into buying third-person shooters–they always suck. Can somebody name one good TPS from this generation? And don’t say Gears of War because that plays more like an FPS than a TPS.

Off the top of my head:
MGS 4. You could say that it’s a stealth game, but it could definitely be played mostly as a shooter.
Uncharted/Uncharted 2 as well.

The shooting was the weakest part of both of those games. Shooting from the third person perspective just doesn’t work for me. It feels clunky and unresponsive. The very act of shooting things in an FPS is fun for me. There’s just a certain visceral immersion. Third person–well, then you’re just shooting stuff but without all the fun of it being in real life.
What the more interesting topic is, in my mind at least, is why Gears of War is different. I’d attribute it to how far the aiming zooms in, pretty much giving you a third-ear perspective to go with your crosshairs. Thoughts?

Thanks chief. I was seriously debating it, but this seals its fate. I guess I’ll just keep screwing around with old games and doing online RDR achievements now and again. I was really starting to get in the mood for some survival horror for some reason, too. If I had a PS3 I could play my old Silent Hill games… OH WAIT. No I couldn’t.
Annnnyway – there’s gotta be some other game coming out… the preliminary on Alpha Protocol is bad news bears, much to Ryan’s chagrin, I’m sure. And with that out, that doesn’t leave much.
