Trailers: Starcraft II commercial

So apparently this commercial debuted during the NBA finals the other night (does anybody here even know who’s playing?). I wonder how many casual gamers will be tricked into thinking Starcraft II is a sci-fi shooter?

First of all, lol, yeah that doesn’t do a good job (or any sort of job) at showing wth the game is…

Second of all, subtitled numbered sequels where the first installment had no subtitle are always bad. BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams is my case in point. And yeah I know. But originally. They must have realized they were letting on their big secret that the game sucked. So there. KotOR 2: The Sith Lords is another good candidate.

Well, this is a little different because Starcraft 2 is being split up in to three different games with separate campaigns for the Terran, Zerg, and Protoss. So, these subtitles are actually of some use in that they tell us which campaign the game includes.

Wait, what? So there are three Starcraft 2s? And you have to buy them all separately?

Welcome to 2008. Maybe 2009. They’re being released at different times, so it’s not like you have to buy them all at once. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing I leave for you to decide. The Terran campaign is the first one being released.

Edit: Oh, wait. I may have misled by accident. According to Wikipedia: “StarCraft II is split into three installments: the base game with the subtitle Wings of Liberty, and two expansion packs, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.” I suppose it’s the same concept, but thinking of them as expansion packs instead of full games seems to make it different somehow.

It’s very different, ’cause that means StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is THE StarCraft II, not one of many StarCraft IIs (as stupid as that already was).

That makes the expansions *correctly* titled StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty: Heart of the Swarm, and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty: Legacy of the Void.

You see what I’m saying? This is madness!

No, they’re not going to be called “Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty: Heart of the Swarm” Each one will be separated, as follows:

              Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty
Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm
Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void

Each one focuses on each race, ergo, each receives their own title.

It’s too bad there is doubt. I’ve played the beta, which of course was only multiplayer, but I thought it was pretty fantastic. The single player is supposed to be full of things to do.

And really, other than Starcraft for the console, what game has Blizzard made that wasn’t a great, polished game? There’s a reason it’s been like 12 years between Starcraft 1 and 2.

Well, yeah, they’re not going to call them that. But that’s not my point. My point is, for your titles (their titles) to make sense, they would’ve had to have been separate games.

The correct title for any given expansion is NAME OF CORE GAME: EXPANSION NAME. Blizzard did the job right with WoW and its expansions, for instance. But since there is no game called “StarCraft II,” and the core game is instead called “StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty” – proper naming dictates that that entire thing has to appear like I outlined above.

’cause it’s like, you see “World of Warcraft: Cataclysm” and you know it’s an expansion by the fact it has a subtitle, you know then, just by the name, that World of Warcraft must be owned to play it. But here, you look at Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm, for instance, and you see its an expansion, you would figure (by the name) that Starcraft II must be owned to play it.

But the joke is on you, because there IS no Starcraft II. There’s only Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, itself not named any differently than the expansions. So you’d really have to dig to figure out that that name, not different at all than the expansions, denotes something more than any of those names of the expansions.

They should have all been stand alone titles with, any one of them, able to function as the core game depending on the order installed (more importantly, any one of them could have conceivably acted as an expansion which justifies their subtitle). OR Wings of Liberty should have been dropped from the core game, thus leaving you with just StarCraft II. OR they should have all just been released together as one game, StarCraft II. My personal favorite is my first option, TBH.

I have to agree with Mr. Skates here on the name topic. But as for the whole three separate games fiasco, I’d call that poor judgment on Blizzard’s part. It leads to the perception that when you buy Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty you’re not getting a complete game.

They would have been better to just call Wings of Liberty Starcraft II and not have harped on playable races for the campaign. I don’t think people would be upset with only being able to play the human campaign. That way, when they reveal expansion campaigns for the other races, people are like, “Oh, that was nice of Blizzard to add these alternate perspectives for us. I think I’ll buy that.” As it is now, I think some people will feel like, “Oh, it’s been 5 years since they released the first part of Starcraft II, and now it’s finally complete. Thanks a lot, guys.”
