Reactions: Assassin’s Creed devs want series to take “a breather” in 2011

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Ubisoft Montreal’s Jean-Francois Boivin said that “I don’t think there’s going to be an Assassin’s Creed in 2011. I think we’re going to let it breathe a bit and really focus on bringing something new and exciting for the next time around. This [Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood] is the end of Ezio’s story. This is it.” At least somebody in Ubisoft is using their brain. Boivin likened the series to crops, saying, “You can’t plough a field every year. Once every three years – or once every something – you have to let it breathe. You have to let the minerals back in. I think it’s the same thing with any license, really.”

I know would rather have the developers take their time to create something fresh and new, what with all the annual sequels that get copy-pasted onto store shelves these days. But don’t take this as confirmation that the series is going on hiatus, because Boivin says himself that, “…business can come back and override everything I say because at the end of the day it’s about selling games…” But if the developers aren’t really feeling Assassin’s Creed for next year, paired with the fact that series creator Patrice Desilets departed Ubisoft earlier this year, well, a break makes sense. Hopefully Ubisoft’s stockholders understand.

Good and bad. Good that they’ll take some time away from it, or more time to work on the next one, to make it much better, than trying to rush another game out next year. When you focus too much on something, you eventually lose sight of it, which would mean a bad game.

Bad that we have to wait a couple of years for the next one.

But, I do certainly hope that this AC:B will be as great as the first two.

I wouldn’t count on Brotherhood being as good as the first two. In my eyes, it overlooks what those games are all about–the templar conspiracy and how it affects Desmond. Plus, it looks to be entirely combat focused, which isn’t what I want out of the franchise. But to be fair, if you really liked ACII, then Brotherhood has the same setting and characters, so there’s a chance you could enjoy it just as much. I just know I won’t.
