Reactions: Nintendo announcing Wii HD at E3?

Game Informer “has heard from multiple sources that [Nintendo] will unveil it [new console] at E3 this summer if not sooner.” Given E3′s June 7th kickoff, this rumor certainly makes the May 15th Wii price drop rumor more believable.

Game Informer goes on to say that they’ve “confirmed with multiple sources that this new home system is capable of running games at HD resolutions.” Kotaku reports that “we’ve heard that the machine will be more powerful than current-gen systems.” It is unclear at this point whether the new HD console will be backwards compatible with the Wii or if it’ll even carry the Wii brand.

In fact, we know next to nothing about this secret console yet, but an “anonymous source” says that “Nintendo is doing this one right. [It's] not a gimmick like the Wii.” What that means for motion controls I don’t know, although I’d find it hard to imagine Nintendo abandoning them at this point.

What we do know is that Nintendo is making this machine to compete with Microsoft and Sony in the hardcore market, and a big part of that competition will involve third-party publishers. Nintendo is allegedly already showing the new system off to publishers in an effort to give them as much time as possible to develop some AAA titles for the console’s late 2012 release.

Of course, Nintendo has yet to confirm any of this, but all of the most respected journalism outlets have all but assured the legitimacy of the story. And it makes sense too, considering how badly the Wii’s sales have been tailing off over the past year or so. So should we start taking bets on whether or not Skyward Sword will be delayed so it can be ported and release simultaneously with the Wii HD version?

Kind of sounds like they’re just playing catching up, 5 years late.

These reports might change your tune. Rumor has it that the controller will feature a 6 inch HD touchscreen display and that the system can stream game content to this screen. The motion controls are also allegedly improved–better than the PlayStation Move. Reports are also saying that it is indeed backwards compatible with the Wii.

If all of this turns out to be true, however, I’d have to imagine that this console is going to carry a bit of a price tag. That’s not really Nintendo’s style, nor do I think gamers will be crazy about spending big bucks on this system when so many good games are still coming out and pushing the limits of the PS360. I also have to wonder if third-party publishers will be truly interested in utilizing all of the system’s features when the PS360 has a bigger user-base and they could just port those games to the Wii HD with no real changes. Nintendo could run into the same problem they have now where 1st party titles are the only ones that truly take advantage of the system.
