Reactions: Assassin’s Creed: Revelations concludes Ezio’s trilogy

Remember when there used to be a main trilogy to this series? I wonder how brutally that original narrative vision has been violated since Ezio came along and demanded his own trilogy just because an Italian accent’s sexier than a…vague Middle Eastern accent? Anyways…Game Informer has revealed their June 2012 issue’s cover story, and it’s all about Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.
The latest in Ubisoft’s uber-popular series, Revelations is due out this November. Evidently, we’ll get to control not only Ezio, not only Desmond, but Altair too in this romping good stroll around “Constantinople at the height of the Ottoman Empire.” Given the centuries of difference in each character’s respective birth dates, it’s safe to assume that there will be multiple time-lines. Game Informer promises that “Ezio’s final chapter will bring the answers that fans have been waiting four years to uncover.” What exactly that means for a proper Assassin’s Creed III is unclear.
While the juicy details haven’t leaked just yet, GI does tease info on “all the new features that set Revelations apart, from a brand new weapon and tool that changes the way you’ll fight and traverse the world, to extensive details on the newly customizable multiplayer game.” Early speculation on the tool seems to center around a grappling hook of some sort. Maybe Ezio can grapple his ass out of the series so we can finally get the conclusion to the real trilogy.

I too would just like to see the trilogy come to a close, and then they just stop there before killing the genre out, like so many other franchises are doing. I really wish it wasn’t about money, but more about giving a compelling story with great characters and gameplay that closes forever, if you know what I mean.

I sort of disagree with both your and Cody’s sentiment. I think even with the continuation/conclusion of Ezio’s story that Ubisoft has/will continue to deliver a compelling story with great characters and great gameplay. Brotherhood was much more than I expected it would be and I’ve accepted that Assassin’s Creed is no longer just a trilogy. If they continue to deliver the same high level of gameplay and story that they have been, then I’m fine with the series continuing into the foreseeable future.

After ACII’s sales, I accepted that the series wasn’t going to be just a trilogy either. But the point is that it set out as a trilogy, and all of a sudden a sub-trilogy spawns up in the middle? If Ezio’s story is to have any substantial meaning, then there is no way it’s not affecting the original narrative vision for the core trilogy. This isn’t like ODST or Reach, where the spin-offs came after the core trilogy and built new stories.
Ubisoft should finish what they originally set out to do, and then they can make as many annual sequels as they want, especially given the flexibility of this universe.
Also, aren’t you the least bit concerned at the prospect of 3 consecutive years with AC games? Especially when at least 2 and likely 3 of them are running on the same engine? Ubisoft is going to burn this franchise out and they don’t have a damn thing to fall back on right now.

Of course I’m concerned about the series getting burnt out with annual entries, but Brotherhood sort of alleviated that fear in me. Obviously it’s always a possibility, but I’m less cynical about the prospect of it happening now. I think Revelations has enough going for it by bringing back Altair that it will be just as good as Brotherhood. After Revelations though, given that their billing it as the end of Ezio’s trilogy and what not, if they don’t come up with a proper sequel to the “core trilogy” then I’ll start to worry.

Some solid details on what Revelations will feature. It certainly seems to be adding a lot, but I just can’t muster up any interest for what amounts to a delay in the real story’s conclusion.
