Reactions: Mass Effect 2: Rebel without a cause
Well, at least I get this awesome “so under-cover that the SPECTREs will think you’re a bad guy” sort of feeling from that ever-so-brief trailer. I think that could be a good direction for the game, and from everything we’ve seen so far, Bioware seems to be making good on their promise for a darker storyline. The only thing that disappoints me about this trailer is the implication that we’ll likely still be playing as Shephard full time. I think it would be really interesting if they split the gameplay between Shephard’s secret mission and a SPECTRE agent or old friend’s search for him. And oh my god! What if Shephard and your SPECTRE character met up and fought because Shephard couldn’t risk jeopardizing the mission and then one of them dies and it sets up Mass Effect 3!?! Yeah, I’m getting way ahead of myself here. Guess we’ll just have to wait ’til E3 to see if my sweetly delicious hopes for Mass Effect 2‘s storyline come true.

By the way, does anybody know the true spelling of Sheppard’s name? I spell it like that. But Kotaku spells it “Shephard.” Could it be “Shepperd”? The possibilities are endless. Let’s just call him Shep.

Wait a minute… you WANT splitting gameplay between two main characters? Umm… Yeah, it worked so well with Halo 2. I know that’s my favorite one. I wonder why they didn’t bring it back in 3? *COUGH* … *AHEM* … etc…

Dude, the problem with Halo 2 WAS NOT splitting between the Arbiter and Chief. I thought that was awesome. It’s called getting perspective. I like my stories to be more than one-sided. The problem with Halo 2 was shitty level design/pacing and that “ending.” I very much enjoyed the Arbiter’s story, and idk why everybody else hates it.
And in regards to Mass Effect, it would make for some fresh story telling opportunities in a very formulaic genre. And as I pointed out with my wishful hopes for the story, they could actually kill off one of your characters and still carry the story and game on. Not to mention, it would be pretty awesome to be able to build to completely different characters all in one play through. The more I think about this idea the more I love it.
