Feature: What lies beyond violence?

So the intricacies of the universe have recently come together to get me thinking about the role violence plays in video games. Mostly, the fact that virtually every mission in Mass Effect 2 forces me into combat even when I want to be diplomatic and an article I recently read on Kotaku have presented this question to me. Amidst the incoherent rambling of said Kotaku article, there was a choice quote that stuck out to me:
Author: CodyReactions: PlatinumGames reveals Vanquish
Well, going off the trailer, which reveals next to nothing about the game, I can’t say I’m too excited about this yet. Another space-marine shooter? Really? But, Vanquish is being directed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and produced by Okami creator Atsushi Inaba, so maybe there’s hope yet. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Author: CodyReactions: Return of the Battlefront?

If Koatku is to be believed, Slant Six Games, the developer behind SOCOM Confrontation and SOCOM Fire Team Bravo 3 is collaborating with Lucasarts is working on that Star Wars: Battlefront fix you’ve been waiting for.
Author: CodyReactions: Borderlands’ “Secret Armory of General Knoxx” detailed

Remember that third installment of Borderlands DLC I reported last week? Well, it’s going by “The Secret Armory of General Knoxx” now, which supposedly markets better than “DLC pack 3.” As promised, the new pack will raise the level cap, although Gearbox has yet to specify what the new cap will be. They were nice enough to drop a few details, though.

By golly, this game really looks like the mother’s milk!
Author: CodyTrailers: BioShock 2 multiplayer gameplay
Now that it’s official that BioShock 2 won’t be supporting LANs (is Bungie the only studio that cares anymore?) you probably want to know what you and your friends will be missing out on. Going off of that video, I’d have to say, “not much.” How is playing as a Big Daddy any different from a regular character other than a gun that presumably does more damage? What a missed opportunity. They should have made it like one-hit kills but the player moves very slowly. Or the player can charge but only use the drill attack. I’m not really interested in a Big Daddy skin with no real gameplay differences. I don’t mean to be too harsh though…I see that things like turrets will play a role in multiplayer, which I’m assuming can be hacked and so forth. I get the feeling that BioShock 2‘s multiplayer will probably offer a different feel from most competitive shooters, but it likely won’t step too far out of the box. Too bad.
Author: CodyTrailers: Interview with Spec Ops: The Line’s Greg Kasavin
Well, a moderately interesting game just got a whole lot more interesting for me, or anybody else who knows and loves the talented Mr. Kasavin. But all bias aside, the way they explained the morality in this game does sound very appealing to me. I’ll certainly be keeping tabs from now on.
