Feature: Rethinking the online experience

There are so many things wrong with this.

After spending a fair amount of time with the Halo: Reach beta last week, which I had a pretty good time with, online multiplayer has been the focus of my thoughts for the first time in a while. And really, when I think about online gaming, I tend to think about how little of it I do these days. Back in the days of Halo 2 and maybe even extending into my time with Modern Warfare 1, I generally paid a visit to the virtual killing fields on a daily basis. But a lot has changed since then, both in my personal life and in the industry. Rather than wasting your time with an exploration of why I can’t seem enjoy the competitive online scene for more than a month at a time anymore, I’ll just go with the easy answer and say that all the kids I used to play with no longer play games online and that I’m not entirely interested in meeting digital friends. So for me, the novelty of a new game and primal competition can keep me satisfied for maybe month, but as soon as I pick up a newer game I have no interest in returning to the never-ending massacre that I had been contributing to. How can developers change this behavior?

Review: Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening

Score: Good
Difficulty played on: Normal
Time to beat: A little over 20 hours with almost all side-quests.
Loved the most: Loot. Sweet, sweet loot.
Hated the most: Way too easy.

Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening is an expansion for Dragon Age: Origins that is available through download or retail disc. Awakening requires an active Origins save file in order to play. If you’re interested in the Dragon Age franchise but haven’t played Origins, check out this review.

Trailers: Ladies Love Cool Mike

I totally stole that headline from GiantBomb, but it was too good to pass up. As for the actual game, could I please see some extended gameplay and more than three characters?

Trailers: Call of Duty: Black Ops Reveal trailer

Not entirely sure why they’re calling this the reveal trailer considering this game already had one about a week ago, but whatever. My thoughts are that it looks fun but hardly gives off a Vietnam vibe. I mean, if you’re going to make a game about the Cold War, I would think that you might use some of the many iconic Vietnam War films as inspiration, and all I’m getting out of this is “Modern Warfare 2 with older guns.”

Reactions: Natal pricing, premium PSN leaked?

It’s that time of year again! Time for wildly speculative E3 rumors to pop up for weeks leading up to the show, with some sure to be true and others to fade into oblivion. I always feel bad about reporting on news that isn’t actually news, like when a Swedish retailer listed Microsoft’s Project Natal at a $200 price point before Microsoft quickly shot the rumor down without providing any information of their own. Common sense would indicate that Natal will be cheaper than that, but there’s no real way to know until this June, when E3 will inevitably unveil everything we need to know about Microsoft’s motion controller. My uninformed predictions? The name will be changed to a catchy, one syllable word and it will sell for around $85. I also think they’ll be revealing a Slim model of the 360 that will come with Natal packed in for $300.

Our Adventures: Lost – “What They Died For”

I’ll be honest with you, I’ve got a real close pal over right now and I’m not entirely interested in writing another 1000 word rant on how disappointed I am with the latest episode of Lost. Pretty much, Jack officially became the Island’s new protector, Ben may or may not have turned to the dark side again after killing Widmore (was really hoping for more of a confrontation than that), and Desmond busted Kate and Sayid out of jail so he could take them to Daniel Faraday’s concert.

Trailers: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light looks fun

And I feel weird about feeling that way, but for some reason this game looks like a blast to me. Maybe it’s the fact that it will be an inexpensive co-op experience when it goes for sale on XBLA and PSN later this summer. I will say that I feel sorry for which ever player gets stuck with the non-Lara character, though. His boobs aren’t nearly big enough to maintain interest.

Trailers: Where in the world is Alpha Protocol?

Apparently, it’s in the part with sub-par graphics and inappropriately dressed Russian women. I’m still hoping Obsidian can weave together an intriguing story in this suspenseful world of espionage, and maybe they will, but my excitement for Alpha Protocol has only dwindled over the past couple months. Maybe if they listed outer-space as one of the locales in the game I’d be back on the wagon, but much to my dismay, it appears as if we’ll be staying in this atmosphere.

Trailers: Check out Naughty Bears on InsaneBear

No, I’m not trying to sully this fine website with beastly, pornographic content. Naughty Bear is an actual video game. It’s a game that I don’t know very much about, but its trailers seem to fit in with the operation we run here. In fact, that almost gives me the motivation to research what this game is all about…almost. So you’re welcome. I know you guys like it when I waste your time.
