Trailers: Kingdoms of Amalur launch trailer
A generic trailer for a generic game. At least they’re consistent…
Author: CodyTrailers: Kingdoms of Amalur’s art design sets itself apart…
By looking exactly like Fable‘s. Come on, guys. This stylized, colorful, cartoony trend is starting to get just as old as hyper-realism. Maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement, but I’d love to hear an argument on what makes Reckoning‘a art direction completely unique from everything else. Why hasn’t somebody made a game world in the vein of Picasso’s work or something like that? Lord, give indie games the power to save us all!

Don’t get me wrong: I love RPGs. I also happen to be a big fan of many of the people involved in this game’s development process. But every video I see for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning just further cements the unfortunate feeling that there isn’t a single defining feature to be found. With so many incredible games coming out nearly every month this year, I don’t really see myself devoting RPG type hours to something I’ve played ten times over. Still, if your anticipation hasn’t been dissuaded, you can look for Reckoning on February 7th.

“In-between” of course representing trans-dimensional manipulations of Fate itself. What, your game doesn’t have those? But fancy names aside, this trailer may as well be describing the combat of any modern Action-RPG. There are a lot of big names attached to this game (Ken Rolston, Todd McFarlane, R.A. Salvatore), and most of the gameplay I’ve seen looks pretty fun, but for the life of me, I just can’t pick out a single innovation that Reckoning brings to the table. Could Big Huge Games have an ace up its sleeve before the February 7th launch? Maybe? Please?

You might say that Marty Stoltz is the king of cut-scenes at Big Huge Games. No? Not even a chuckle?

It’s mission improbable time with the incredible humanoid Ken Rolston! But yeah…it definitely sounds like the teams at Big Huge Games and .38 Studios are coming up with some cool narrative threads to work with, and with the likes of R.A. Salvatore, Todd McFarlane, and the aforementioned Mr. Rolston working on Reckoning, I’d expect nothing less. Look for the game on the PS3 and 360 this February 7th.
Author: CodyTrailers: It’s a Kingdoms of Amalur extravaganza!
And I don’t use that term lightly. Ken Rolston is certainly jazzed about the game. And the 20 minute demo below definitely gives off those Morrowind and Oblivion vibes you’d expect from the guy who made them. I think the only real question is whether or not KoA: Reckoning will have salesmen and peddlers capable of living up to Mr. Rolston’s illustrious performance.

Because while the slightly exaggerated visuals and action-focused combat may remind you of Fable, the first details on Reckoning‘s story hint that this game will probably take a much more serious approach than Peter Molyneux’s off-kilter adventures with Chesty.

And begin comparing it to Fable. Rumor has it that one of the “fate shift” kills involves your character kicking a chicken at an enemy’s face with such velocity that he will actually taste like chicken. Somebody grab me my flame sword!
