Feature: The game development dream team

Like this, but with less athletic ability.

What if by some dark, unspeakable magics contractual obligations ceased to exist and every game developer in the industry was suddenly free to work with whomever he or she pleased? What if the stars aligned and money wasn’t an issue and a development “dream team” descended from the heavens? What would it look like? What would its name be? Could we even play one of Valizzard’s (working title) games without our minds exploding from the awesomenesss?

Reactions: Blizzcon 2011 News and Trailer Roundup

So Blizconn 2011 happened over the weekend, and the big news that came out of the Blizzard fanfest was the announcement of a new World of Warcraft expansion. It was not entirely unexpected as there were rumors of the panda-themed expansions back in August. Titled Mists of Pandaria, the expansion pack will make several changes to the world’s biggest MMO. Foremost among them is a new race called, wait for it, the Pandarens; a new continent known as Pandaria for them to call home; a new Monk class; a level cap increase to 90; and a new Pokemon-like pet battle system. For a more in-depth look at the game you can check out Kotaku’s hands-on preview.

Reactions: The Old Republic, Diablo III get release dates

When is BioWare going to get on the musical trailer bandwagon and make an epic seven-minute Jedi massacre set to “Civil War”? What’s that you say? The Sith-Republic conflict isn’t a civil war? Well, I say that we’re all citizens of the galaxy, man. But where ever you stand on that subject, you’ll have the pleasure of finally mixing it up with your fellow citizens starting December 20th. Each copy of The Old Republic comes with a free 30-day subscription, and after that your subscription options are $15 per single month, $42 for three months, or $78 for six months. No word yet on five-year plans.

Trailers: 8 Minutes of Pure Diablo III Gameplay and More!

Here’s a bunch of new gameplay footage of the various classes Diablo III has to offer. Man, do some of those powers look like fun. I certainly wish I could summon forth towers of corpses to fall onto my enemies, or  cartwheel very swiftly from place to place, or shoot tornadoes out of my body.

Don't trust that panda; he's insane!

The anticipation of a scrumptious delight is often times just as good as the consumption the treat itself. Imagining just how heavenly an experience you’re about to embark on with only your own reservations to hold you back has a way of stirring joy like few other things. This is how I’m feeling right now about a couple of juicy, succulent, down-right delicious rumors.

Reactions: Diablo III coming to consoles?

If some recent job listings spotted by Gamasutra are any indication, the traditionally PC oriented Blizzard team is looking for “lead designer, console,” “lead programmer, console,” and “senior producer, console” for Diablo III. The lead designer position is asking for applicants with “prior experience in console game development” and an “extensive knowledge of Diablo.” The lead programmer ad calls for “an experienced engineer to lead console development on the Diablo team.”

Reactions: Starcraft II expansion 18 months away?

We’ve known from the start that Starcraft II would ship in three separate editions with each offering a campaign unique to one of the game’s three factions. Wings of Liberty detailed the human exploits back in July, and Blizzard’s Battle.net project director Greg Canessa may have let slip the release window for the Zerg faction’s time in the spotlight. In a Q & A session following Canessa’s presentation at the GDC Online event, a question dealing with future Battle.net features such as trading replays, broadcasting replays, and upgrading profiles prompted Canessa to mention the Zerg expansion, Heart of the Swarm. “[They are] a main area of focus we’re going to be seeing on the Starcraft side over the next 18 months between now and Heart of the Swarm.”
