The characters from that other Resident Evil game. You know, the one that everybody forgot about when RE6 was announced. Or maybe it was RE: Revelations that we all forgot. But just because this particular entry in the series is old hat doesn’t mean that its riveting one-liners can’t compete with the best Capcom has to offer. “I don’t get paid enough for this,” indeed.

And as long as I’m on the topic of Capcom’s masterful grasp of the English language, I’ll give somebody ten space bucks if you can think of a game with more syllables in its name than RE: ORC.

Capcom’s Action-RPG seems to be going a bit under the radar–so much so that the publisher feels like this demo tie-in to a much bigger game is necessary–but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be paying attention to it.

As the trailer above communicates, the game’s terribly Japanese narrative sensibilities might not be its strong suit, but previous trailers have shown fluid, visceral combat unparalleled by the genre heavyweights. Dragon’s Dogma is also doing some pretty interesting stuff with NPC companions. This is a game that any RPG fan should be looking into.

Obviously, Capcom feels the same way. That’s why they’re packing in a Resident Evil 6 demo for those who purchase this lesser known, original IP. Xbox users will receive access to the demo starting July 3rd, while PlayStation owners will have to hold out a full two months until September 5th. There are no details yet on what exactly the demo will include or if it will eventually become available to the general, non-dragon-slaying public. What we do know is that Dragon’s Dogma owners will be able to download a zombie-dragon mount for use in RE6. Okay, so maybe that’s not true, but it sure sounds like a more effective marketing tool than plain old demos, no?

And it appears to be running with the action-oriented direction established by RE5. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing (even if I am craving a true Survival-Horror experience)–the action seems much more fluid than its predecessor. Melee looks like it’s going to play a much bigger and more bad ass role this time around and the cover system looks like it’s been improved. There also appears to be some sick-nasty shooting while sliding backward on the floor action, and zombies can reach their tentacles over cover to tear you out. Really, it looks much closer to Gears of War than traditional Resident Evil gameplay.

In that same vein, it looks like we’ll be playing as multiple protagonists as well. At today’s Resident Evil Anniversary Premier Party event, Capcom said that Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, and a third mystery man “who’s told to save the world” (the mercenary in the trailer) will all be playable.

Leon’s story will take place in America with the help of Helena Harper, a member of the freshly zombified President’s security detail. Chris’ story starts in China with an unknown partner and progresses simultaneously with Leon’s. If I had to guess, I’d say that they’ll meet up at some point, possibly in a confrontation over Leon’s new partner, who claims she’s responsible for the outbreak.

Lastly, the big bad that chases after the mercenary in the trailer goes by the name of Javo and is said to have an “even greater impact than the zombies.” Presumably then, he is not a zombie in the traditional sense. Oh, and yes, the zombies seen in this video are in fact true zombies, not the Uroboros infected of the series’ past two entries.

All and all, I have to say that RE6 looks pretty exciting. I don’t really know if it can be classified as Horror anymore, in any sense of the word, but it looks fun. I’m sure we’ll see plenty more in the months to come, as bio-hazard is set to kick off this November 20th.

Y’know, as much as so-called DMC “fans” like to whine about the newest Devil May Cry, it still looks like it will be a ton of fun to actually play. The combos, the different forms, the focus on fluid action, and the environment as an enemy, all add up to what’s looking like a great action game.

This place sure looks different than it did the last time I went down the pipe. Oh, sorry: wrong game. In case the gravity defying gameplay didn’t clue you in, we’re talking about DmC: Devil May Cry here, and boy does it look gnarly! I haven’t always been sold on this game in the past, and I still can’t spot of mite of challenge from that awful AI, but this is probably the most exciting footage of young Dante I’ve seen thus far. As long as there are more environments like that and the combos keep coming, I think Ninja Theory’s latest should turn out pretty well.

As far as I can tell it’s exactly like the other modes but with some nostalgia-inducing character skins? I mean, this video does say that each Resident Evil icon has his or her own special ability, but I can’t imagine the regular modes not having some sort of class structure. Maybe each character has to take out a specific nemesis from the other team in melodramatic fashion. Okay: I totally made that up, but it’d be cool, right?

Name's Rick.

First it was Frank, then it was Chuck, and now, if a source that spoke to Siliconera is to be believed, it’s Rick. Capcom must have some fetish for protagonists with one syllable names that end in “K.”

So this source tells Siliconera that Capcom’s next zombie-killing simulator, Dead Rising 3, will be set in Los Perdidos, California and that the protagonist is an orphan auto-mechanic. Rick’s town is locked down and put under martial law after a zombie outbreak, but he knows he has to get out of dodge before it’s too late. Unlike former Dead Rising protagonists, Rick is a little unsure of himself at first (he hasn’t covered wars, y’know), but he’s dead set on using his god-given talents as a mechanic to get a plane up and running before a bomb destroys Los perdidos.

Not only will Rick have to contend with zombies and bombs, he’s also got some lunatic survivors on his tail. One of which drives, and I kid you not, a “Roller Hog,” a motorcycle with a steamroller on the front.

In the midst of all the zombie killing and roller hog dodging, the plot in Dead Rising 3 will feature themes dealing with illegal immigration. Apparently there’s a group of infected survivors who haven’t registered with the government, known oh-so-subtly as “illegals.”

While it’s all rumor at this point, it certainly seems like Capcom’s signature brand of crazy and ridiculous, and I for one can’t wait to roll over some zombies with my roller hog.

I mean, when the very walls of DmC: Devil May Cry are telling you to die, berating you with offensive language, and telling you to…fall? Wait, seriously? Not that I advocate any kind of bullying, but perhaps the world’s insults/threats might hit a little closer to home if it expressed its distaste for skinny jeans and emo hair-cuts? You’re right: that’d be way too tongue-in-cheek for a game about a sword-wielding, duster-clad, demon-fighting bad ass.

But the gameplay is what really matters, so let’s talk about that. Specifically, I really like the idea of the environment becoming an enemy in and of itself–dynamically morphing before your eyes–but something about this clip just seems to lack the suspense you’d expect in such a scenario. Maybe it’s because the floor only tears apart at your pace, but I don’t really feel like young Dante is in danger. And is it just me, or does this world-altering, alternate reality vibe just beg for some 4th wall breaking Eternal Darkness kind of action?

It certainly looks DmCy, what with all the levitational ass-kicking being dished out. But maybe Dante could avoid all of this needless violence if he simply wore a hood and didn’t brandish a sword in public. Just sayin’…
