Feature: The game development dream team

Like this, but with less athletic ability.

What if by some dark, unspeakable magics contractual obligations ceased to exist and every game developer in the industry was suddenly free to work with whomever he or she pleased? What if the stars aligned and money wasn’t an issue and a development “dream team” descended from the heavens? What would it look like? What would its name be? Could we even play one of Valizzard’s (working title) games without our minds exploding from the awesomenesss?

Feature: Top 10 game developers under 40

Damn those kids and their talkies and rock and roll and vidja games...

Do you think Shigeru Miyamoto is ever going to sit down to play a game with his grandkids and complain that, “Back in my day, video games were different!”? Obviously that’s assuming Miyamoto-san doesn’t simply develop games straight into the grave, but it introduces the point that our industry’s creative leaders are moving into their twilight and must make room for the future. So who is going to eat that proverbial mushroom and grow into the next industry giant?

Trailers: Cliffy B takes us through a storm of bullets

Yeah, it’s the same level shown at E3, but Dude Huge’s in-depth commentary makes it worth watching. There are a few things I don’t like about the game, like the macho power-fantasy attitude, but all things considered, Bulletstorm looks like a hell of good time. I can definitely see the range of attacks wearing a little thin after a while, though, so hopefully People Can Fly adds some more depth to the combo system.

I didn't think pictures of Dude Huge without a Lancer in hand existed...

That caption was going to be a witty D&D reference given what I’m about to tell you, but really, Clifford Bleszinski looking professional for once is the real news here. But anyways, earlier this week the Epic Design Director told British magazine Develop that, “I had a conversation with Harvey Smith–one of the lead designers on [the action RPG] Deus Ex–and said to him the future of shooters is RPGs. He said he completely agreed.” Bleszinski then went on to praise hybrid shooter BioShock and offered a few words of excitement for Gearbox’s upcoming Borderlands. “Randy Pitchford at Gearbox is an absolutely brilliant designer and business man, and I think Borderlands is not getting as much hype as it should because it really looks like a more accessible, shootery version of Fallout.” If future Gears of War titles move in a direction closer to Deus Ex and BioShock and Borderlands, I’m completely fine with that. I have a soft spot for shooter-RPGs and wish there were more. Speaking of which, it’d be nice to hear something about Deus Ex 3.
