Write About Games: Reflections
As I sit here at 4 a.m., wondering why the hell I am still awake, I can’t help but reflect on video games. They have an uncanny ability to bring people together, whether it is just to discuss them, to play them, to compete in them, to buy them or to just plain swear at a screen together.
I recently played a moderately shitty game with Cody and Ryan, and despite the overall crappiness of the game, and its difficulty, we couldn’t help but press on. We even shared a few laughs about it, and worked hard until the very end. This got me thinking about the power of video games to pull people together, and allow us to share in a common goal. They have a certain power that I feel other genres are lacking; the ability to give us completely different experiences, while playing the same game. The ability to do this puts the video game industry in a very unique place in society, a place where people may be as “hardcore” or “casual” as possible, a place that can be as entertaining as it is expressive, and a place that has SO MUCH potential for expansion and development.
