Feature: InsaneBear’s 2011 Game of the Year

Another year, another reflective diary entry on how many social opportunities I sacrificed for video games…wait, that’s not right! No: this is a celebration of what has probably been the best year of games since 2007. So let’s get down to business and start with the InsaneBear tradition of looking back on the previous year’s games and re-evaluating our opinions in hindsight.

Score: Great
Difficulty played on: Normal
Time to beat: Roughly 11 hours
Loved the most: Stunningly gorgeous lighting that makes for a distinct visual style.
Hated the most: The weak and confusing story that really starts to drag in the last third of the game.
Of the several new IPs EA pushed in 2008, Visceral Games’ horrific Dead Space turned out to be the biggest success, and now it has the sequel to prove it. Having never played the original myself, I can’t make direct comparisons, but Dead Space 2 does seem to build on its predecessor’s core elements while maintaining a positively superb level of polish. However, it is important to note that the franchise’s second entry is more of an Action game than a Survival-Horror title, which may upset some fans of the original. Still, for what it is, Dead Space 2 is a very entertaining game with some noticeable flaws that hold it back from being truly memorable.
Author: CodyReactions: Get Dead Space 2 on the cheap today only

Do you have some sort of sick fetish where you get off at being terrified? Or maybe you just appreciate the finer artistry of crafting monstrous alien beings? Whatever the reason, I’m assuming that you, dear reader, have some sort of interest in Visceral Games’ Dead Space 2 (and my GameFly queue says I do too). And thanks to Amazon, you can get your grubby little necromorph paws on a copy of the game for just $40, today only. You could also get the collector’s edition for $60, if you happen to require a replica plasma cutter for any reason.
Author: CodyReactions: Dead Space 2 will sever your wallet with DLC
Don’t you love when publishers announce DLC packs on the day of a game’s release? I mean, they’re still putting out developer diaries for this thing! But hey, if the lighting is that gosh darn amazing then maybe just maybe you’ll be convinced to throw down your [undisclosed price] at [undisclosed time] for [undisclosed content].
Author: CodyTrailers: Nobody can hear you smash pumpkins in space
That headline’s just about as clever as the latest trailer for Dead Space 2. I fear that the choice in music may have given away a little too much, though; now nobody will be surprised when we find out that the necromorphs are actually just irradiated sewer rats that made it into outer-space when New York City started launching garbage into the great wide open. Still, Isaac’s second adventure looks to be pretty intense.
Author: CodyTrailers: Dead Space 2 doesn’t sound like much of a horror game
Pretty much everything that guy said about Isaac’s changes violate the things we’d typically find in a survival-horror character. Maybe Visceral Games will pull “scary” off even with an action-hero star, but I have some reservations about that happening.
Author: CodyTrailers: Dead Space 2 lullaby
Good God, that nursery rhyme is a hell of a lot creepier than I remember it being! Hopefully that creepiness is actually part of the game and not just part of a trailer designed to convince us that Dead Space 2 isn’t turning into a straight-up action title.
Author: CodyTrailers: First look at Dead Space 2′s multiplayer
Seems to be the same concept as Left 4 Dead‘s Versus mode, but with less variety in the monsters. The direct combat also looks a bit clunky in a multiplayer setting. This just seems like a bad idea at this point.
Author: CodyReactions: Details on Dead Space 2′s multiplayer?

EA hasn’t had much to say about Dead Space 2‘s multiplayer thus far, but according to GamerNode that’s all about to change. The site reports that EA coughed up some details at the annual GameStop conference in San Antonio, Texas. Namely, “The game will allow players to control the Necromorphs in deathmatch-style combat against standard ‘soldiers,’ and vice-versa, along with other multiplayer types to be announced later.” Sounds a lot like Left 4 Dead‘s Versus modes, which certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Yeah, sure, I guess that sounds cool. I’m going to go back to looking at the pretty visuals now.
