Gamescom 2011: Gears of War 3, doing its thang

That thang being demonstrations of incredible value, of course. Between the four-player co-op, Horde mode 2.0, Beast mode, and the refined competitive multiplayer, Gears 3 is shaping up to be this year’s Halo: Reach in terms of pure value. It’s also got a leg up on Reach in the giant tentacle monster department…

Reactions: Allow Amaterasu to report some minor news to you

Whether you knew it or not, Ammy is rather fond of kibbles, bits, and video games. She keeps tabs on all three and wants you to be informed too.

Trailers: GoW3 goes Beast Mode

Is it just me or did that full steam rolling execution remind anybody of this?

Trailers: Allow Anya Stroud to sell you on GoW 3′s Horde Mode 2.0

A man would have just let the gameplay speak for itself. What are we doing by letting these annoying-voiced women into lead roles? I think I’ll just fortify a secret little closet where Marcus and Dom can be alone, as Cliffy B intended.

Trailers: More Gears of War 3 action

I know that it’s essentially just more Gears, but I love Gears and this final installment in the trilogy seems to be changing all of the right things. Now if they could just get Baird to announce the multiplayer matches, it could be a flawless experience.

Review: Bulletstorm

Score: Meh
Difficulty played on: Hard (second hardest of four settings)
Time to beat: 9 hours
Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Loved the most: The absurdly juvenile vibe that permeates both dialogue and gameplay.
Hated the most: Disappointing lack of depth to the much-hyped skillshot system.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should let you know that Bulletstorm is a game which requires an online pass unless it is purchased new. I got it through GameFly and did not purchase the pass, missing out on six Echoes (score-attack) maps and a silver colored leash. I’m really bummed about that leash, but I somehow doubt it would have been enough to change my assessment of the game.

Trailers: Gears 3 steals Tiger Woods PGA Tour’s announcer

Okay, not really. But doesn’t executive producer Rod Fergusson speak with all the enthusiasm of a golf announcer? I sort of like the absurdity of the contrast and wish an in-game character delivered his lines with such restrained vigor.

Reactions: Get a taste of gaming’s future

That breath-taking video there is from Epic’s GDC 2011 tech demo for the latest version of Unreal Engine 3. It’s described as “Next Generation” technology, but these days, it’s unclear that that really means.

Reactions: Gears 3 beta hits in mid-April

All and all, it sounds like they’re making some pretty good decisions with Gears of War 3‘s multiplayer. The Team Deathmatch mode sounds like an elegant blending of traditional Deathmatch and previous Gears takes on it. The other modes sound improved as well. You can hit up the Gears FaceBook page if you want to vote on which maps will come with the beta, but really, it looks like the action will be great no matter where you’re bayoneting Locusts. Oh, and why is Cole Train’s number 83? Does T.O. have virtual rights over 81 or something? I can’t think of a single diva who wears 83.
