Features: What makes a good side quest?

Some side quests introduce us to party members' family members in the hardest fight of the game. Fun!

So with the recent releases of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Batman: Arkham City, I thought it’d be appropriate to have a discussion on side quests–specifically, what separates the good from the bad? I think we can all agree that when side quests are done well, they unquestionably contribute to a vastly better game experience. In fact, side quests often turn out to be more memorable than main quests for me personally. But why is that?

Review: Fable III

Fable III

Score: Meh
Difficulty played on: No difficulty options
Time to beat: A little over 20 hours with nearly every side-quest
Loved the most: One of the most consistently hilarious games I’ve played in years.
Hated the most: Technically broken in almost every way.

Well, Peter Molyneux, you got me for the last time. The grossly under-rated Fable II charmed me into believing your hype for Fable III and I actually bought in to all of the promises. Never again. It’s bad enough that every new feature in the game boils down to an underdeveloped gimmick, but the utter disregard for technical standards is inexcusable. The parts of Fable III that are taken from its predecessor (humor, combat) are even better, but there’s nothing new worth its salt. I can say without a doubt that Lionhead’s latest entry in my beloved Fable series is the worst.

Reactions: Fable III conquers its 1st colony of DLC

See, the headline makes sense because you play a king in Fable III (which I will be reviewing this week), and kings do things like conquer places that weren’t originally part of their empire, and then they charge people $5 to see those places. Something like that, at least. What I’m trying to say is that come November 23rd, Lionhead will be releasing the “Understone Quest Pack” and the “Exclusive Hair Pack” for $5 and $2, respectively.

Reactions: Fable III comes with free DLC

For those of us who buy new copies, of course. Keeping with the trend of offering downloadable content access codes to gamers willing to support the developer by buying new, Fable III will be giving away access to “One flask of Raise Dead potion, another of Slow Time potion, the Scot Male/Female Hero Outfit, the Highlander Tattoo Set and the Red Setter skin for your virtual pooch.” Not really a huge deterrent to used-buyers, but I’ll be glad to have these things nonetheless. How about exclusive characters or quests like BioWare did withDragon Age?

Reactions: Fable III has an all-star (and British) voice cast

John Cleese, Sir Ben Kingsley, Simon Pegg, Stephen Fry…the list goes on and on. The best part? These aren’t just big names; they actually seem funny in their roles and bring the characters to life. Can’t wait for October 26th.

E3 2010: Fable 3 coming October 26th [Updated with trailer]

Just in time for Halloween. Maybe Lionhead will have some topical DLC on that special day. Anyways, enjoy this interview on combat and such. The trailer from Microsoft’s press conference (which confirms the release date) will be posted just as soon as it’s made available (probably later tonight).
