gears of war

Feature: Pitching Cube

Concept Art - Mixing the sterile, scientific environments of Portal with the grit and gore of Gears of War.

Introduction: You’ve seen the movie; now experience the savage tension of trust and betrayal in the video game adaptation of Cube‘s fight for survival. Take part in four separate campaigns of deadly co-operative puzzle-solving where nothing can be trusted–not your teammates, not even the chamber walls. Communication is the key to survival in this gruesome First-Person physics-based Puzzler that tasks four total strangers with escaping a mysterious cube-shaped structure constituted by countless chambers of death. But can anybody be trusted to divulge everything they know when their life is on the line?

Reactions: Gears of War getting the Kinect treatment?

One of the biggest complaints about Microsoft’s new Kinect hardware since it’s come out and sold over a million units in ten days is that it caters only to a casual audience. This is obviously an image that Microsoft would like to change, and they might be doing just that at Spike TV’s 2010 Video Game Awards show.

Feature: 6 franchises that should get a fighting game

On the contrary, I strongly believe that Afro Thunder deserves his own adventure game.

Perhaps it’s a guilty and fruitless pleasure, but we as nerds love to ask the question “What would happen if these two dudes fought?” I mean, who wouldn’t like to see Kratos in a fight to the death, mano-a-mano with some other bad ass? But quite frankly, cross-overs seem to be a bit of a legal hassle. Can you imagine Sony agreeing to put Sack Boy at the mercy of some schmuck who wants to see how bean bags react to the Master Chief’s fist? Yeah, it’s probably better that we restrict this list to collections of characters from the same game universe. Because when it’s Mario pounding Peach, it’s just hot profit-generating action and everybody’s happy.

Feature: 20 songs that should be used in a game trailer

‘Tis the time of season for game trailers and teasers, and as the past has shown us, a little bit of music can really set the mood. The guys at Epic (Gears of War franchise) are the masters of this art, but other companies are beginning to catch on. Still, this sort of thing invites cliches and cheesiness, so I’ve made this list to help publishers market their games. With that in mind, I’ve tried to put myself in the shoes of the marketing team for a major publisher and have decided to stick to generally well-known songs and have avoided excessive profanity, with a few exceptions. I’ve also avoided instrumental pieces, as that would just make for too easy of a list. So I hope you enjoy my take on this under-discussed topic and have your own songs to add. My list is by no means definitive, and even I feel as though it is unbalanced and doesn’t equally represent enough fields of music, but it is what it is. Now read listen!

I didn't think pictures of Dude Huge without a Lancer in hand existed...

That caption was going to be a witty D&D reference given what I’m about to tell you, but really, Clifford Bleszinski looking professional for once is the real news here. But anyways, earlier this week the Epic Design Director told British magazine Develop that, “I had a conversation with Harvey Smith–one of the lead designers on [the action RPG] Deus Ex–and said to him the future of shooters is RPGs. He said he completely agreed.” Bleszinski then went on to praise hybrid shooter BioShock and offered a few words of excitement for Gearbox’s upcoming Borderlands. “Randy Pitchford at Gearbox is an absolutely brilliant designer and business man, and I think Borderlands is not getting as much hype as it should because it really looks like a more accessible, shootery version of Fallout.” If future Gears of War titles move in a direction closer to Deus Ex and BioShock and Borderlands, I’m completely fine with that. I have a soft spot for shooter-RPGs and wish there were more. Speaking of which, it’d be nice to hear something about Deus Ex 3.

Random: Aren’t game trailers with music awesome?

So I’d feel kind of bad if I let today go by without posting anything…holy crap, there’s a hole in my pants…anyways, so yeah, I was listening to a random play list and Gary Jules’ Mad World came on and made me think of this mightily epic and awesome trailer from a few years back.

Feature: What Defines a Casual Gamer?

So there I am. It’s 5 ‘O clock on a Wednesday morning. The sun is rising on a crisp, cool winters day. Chairs, cables, controllers are all strewn about after the previous nights activites. No, I haven’t woken up bright and early to seize the day. I’m still up, and in about the second hour of a conversation that has encompassed much of the morning.

It looked kinda like this.
