Feature: The episodic business model and video games

Maybe we should try this episodic thing out after Episode 3!

"Maybe we should try this episodic thing out after Episode 3!"

Over the past two months, I’ve been working my way through the seven full seasons of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That’s 145 episodes total. A little over 100 hours of time spent loving and hating the characters who’d entered my dreams (that dream part might just be because of the extreme amount of Buffy I took in in a very short period of time). My point here is that a person can’t help but become attached to characters after spending that much time with them. And when it was finally over, I felt sad. Trailers: Gay Tony’s got Saturday Night Fever

In the first trailer to come out for the Grand Theft Auto IV expansion, “The Ballad of Gay Tony”, Rockstar has apparently prioritized choreographed dancing as a big tick on the back of the game’s virtual box. So, yeah…right. Anyways, I get the feeling that we’ll start to see more DLC like this. Rockstar created such a great, living world with Grand Theft Auto IV, so it only makes sense to put out these mini-stories that don’t necessarily have to deal with the core game’s story. Perhaps the new format will give the developer more creativity in the films they can parody, moving on from crime classics to…dancing classics.
