Feature: InsaneBear’s 2009 Game of the Year

Is this Fiddy's year?

Another year has come and gone, and despite more delays than I can ever remember in one year, 2009 still saw more great games than I could possibly get around to playing. 2009 also saw me jumping into the whole game-writing thing for the first time (well, sort of). Consequently, this is InsaneBear’s first GOTY feature, and we’re going to try to keep it relatively simple. Maybe next year I’ll throw in some quirky awards meant to recognize specific games, but for now, we’ll just be sticking to the GOTY model. Without further ado…

Review: Halo 3: ODST

Score: Good
Difficulty played on: Heroic
Time to beat: 6 hours
Loved the most: Tie between the music and the story-telling structure.
Hated the most: Lack of thoughtful modification to the Halo formula given the player’s new role.

If you’ve been exposed to any form of electronic media in the past six months, you’ve probably heard of a little game called Halo 3: ODST, which tells the story of what happened on Earth following Master Chief’s departure in Halo 2. Or is it an expansion? That’s where a lot of the confusion comes in with Bungie’s experimental new title. They price it like a full game, and in theory, the concepts behind the game should generate an entirely new Halo experience, but at the same time, they rely quite heavily on Halo 3‘s assets and formulas throughout. The end result is a very fun Halo game that will likely satisfy some gamers with its proven techniques and disappoint others with its lack of innovations.

Feature: The episodic business model and video games

Maybe we should try this episodic thing out after Episode 3!

"Maybe we should try this episodic thing out after Episode 3!"

Over the past two months, I’ve been working my way through the seven full seasons of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That’s 145 episodes total. A little over 100 hours of time spent loving and hating the characters who’d entered my dreams (that dream part might just be because of the extreme amount of Buffy I took in in a very short period of time). My point here is that a person can’t help but become attached to characters after spending that much time with them. And when it was finally over, I felt sad. I was certainly happy to have seen the show in its entirety, but at the same time I felt like a part of my life had gone away. I imagine I’ll feel much the same way when Lost ends next year. But I’ve never felt like that after completing a video game.

Trailers: Halo 3: ODST developer diary

The more I see this game the more I find its goodness hard to deny. Sure, it’s an expansion at heart, but they’re doing some really cool things with the story and the gameplay looks like good ole fashion Halo action. The one thing that’s really selling me on this is the Firefly guys personalizing the characters so much. Should be an interesting spin-off.

E3 ’09: Rounding up the stragglers

Because the internet is barren of any funny 09 pics.

Because the internet is barren of any funny '09 pics.

Hello dear readers. You may have noticed my considerable lack of coverage today on the biggest gaming show of the year. Well, I was at work. And until you guys start sending donations, I’ll continue to have to work. But that won’t stop me from trying to round up anything my trusty partner missed, and hopefully I won’t accidentally repeat anything he’s already posted. I’ll try to do this in one or two big posts for your convenience. Enjoy!
