lost season 6
Our Adventures: Lost – “The End”

Well, I wanted to wait a few days to give myself more time to think on the finale and to peruse the IMDB boards in hopes that I’d stumble across some intelligent conversation. Unfortunately, every time I try to think about it my brain decides that there isn’t enough evidence to make sense of everything and shuts down. As for IMDB, pretty much every thread I’ve looked at boils down to either “You’re stupid because you didn’t like the ending,” or “You’re stupid because you liked the ending.” So yeah, I guess I’ll try to give my own scattered thoughts on the conclusion to six of the best years television ever saw.

I’ll be honest with you, I’ve got a real close pal over right now and I’m not entirely interested in writing another 1000 word rant on how disappointed I am with the latest episode of Lost. Pretty much, Jack officially became the Island’s new protector, Ben may or may not have turned to the dark side again after killing Widmore (was really hoping for more of a confrontation than that), and Desmond busted Kate and Sayid out of jail so he could take them to Daniel Faraday’s concert.

Well, depending on how you look at it, that could have either been one of the biggest letdowns in the history of the show or a really great character episode. At this point I just wish the writers (and yes, the writers have hyped it up just as much as the marketing people) would have never played up this whole mystery revelation angle and just made it a show about characters. I have absolutely no faith that we’ll receive satisfactory answers to even half of our questions. But that’s what Lost has become–it’s no longer about the fantastic interactions between interesting characters. It has become an obnoxious oaf trying to impress the other kids on the playground. The writers went out of their way to say that tonight’s episode would prove that they’ve had a plan since Season 1. Ignoring the fact that I fail to see this evidence, do the writers really need to be hyping things any more? This show is so much more enjoyable when I’m not anxiously awaiting some major revelation.

Jesus, that was the most heart-wrenching death in the history of the show. I didn’t think anything could top Charlie’s, but watching Sun and Jin kiss each other, and then when their hands, wedding rings in view, finally lost the strength to cling to each other…that one scene redeemed a relationship that hadn’t been interesting for a couple years now. And at first I was really pissed that the writers were going to rob us of that final bleak thought by not having it be the last scene of the episode, but I think it worked even better when we saw Hurley and Jack break down crying, especially Hurley. It was just so touching, which only makes it more infuriating that they felt the need to throw some stupid ass cliff-hanger (Focke going to “finish what [he] started,” presumably Desmond). Sometimes I feel like there are so many questions to answer and so little time that Season 6 rushes by these beautiful character moments that were so characteristic of earlier seasons. But really, that was a very powerful scene between the Kwons, who are now resting at the bottom of the sea (guess they’re not Adam and Eve). Just wish they spent more time in the sub and less time using crappy CGI from the outside.

Two weeks in a row the writers slap their fans of six years in the face with some pathetic “answer” delivered through casual conversation. It’s seriously getting a little ridiculous now. It’s nice to know that Smokey was taking the form of Christian (at least when Jack first saw him on the Island…Christian’s off-Island appearances still aren’t explained), but the matter-of-fact delivery of this information makes me wish the writers would just leave everything as a mystery so we the viewers can decide for ourselves. The writers are almost talking down to us at this point and it detracts from the quality of the show. Frankly, the majority of the dialogue in Season 6 has been sub-par and a bit forced. Not a whole lot of it feels like the natural character development of previous seasons. But now that that rant’s out of the way…

Well, I’ll try to assess this episode as best as I can but my mind has sort of been occupied with some family matters today, so I don’t know how great of an analysis I can give. But I’ll start by saying that I hooted with joy when that bitch Illana got a face full of dynamite.

That’s what I’m talkin’ about brotha! I think we’ve finally entered the home stretch where every episode is going to be epic in some way or another. But yeah, “Happily Ever After.” You can always count on Des to deliver a great episode. It was certainly one of the more cryptic episodes in the show’s entire run, but I also feel like it could be one of the most dense and telling ones as well. To me, at least 75% of the lines spoken tonight felt like they had some deeper double meaning. This episode shall require re-viewing.

Before I get into anything I’d just like to say that I’m writing this a few hours later than I usually do, so the episode isn’t quite as fresh in my memory. Sorry ’bout that. But anyways, it was a pretty darn good episode. I don’t think it was nearly as mind-blowing as it should have been, but Richard’s personal story was more interesting than most, even if they did try to recapture the magic of “The Constant” at the end and failed.

You know how despite it’s rarity, the Recon armor in Halo 3 is just a superficial skin that adds nothing of substance to the game? Well, that’s how I feel about this latest episode of Lost. I mean, it’s not like it was necessarily bad, it was just utterly pointless filler.

At several points during tonight’s episode I was on the verge of calling it the worst of the season, but by the end of it, they managed to handle everything in such a way that I’d probably label it the best of Season 6 so far. Michael Emerson is clearly one of the most talented actors on this show and it’s always great to see a character-driven episode with him in it.
