Feature: Rethinking the online experience

There are so many things wrong with this.
After spending a fair amount of time with the Halo: Reach beta last week, which I had a pretty good time with, online multiplayer has been the focus of my thoughts for the first time in a while. And really, when I think about online gaming, I tend to think about how little of it I do these days. Back in the days of Halo 2 and maybe even extending into my time with Modern Warfare 1, I generally paid a visit to the virtual killing fields on a daily basis. But a lot has changed since then, both in my personal life and in the industry. Rather than wasting your time with an exploration of why I can’t seem enjoy the competitive online scene for more than a month at a time anymore, I’ll just go with the easy answer and say that all the kids I used to play with no longer play games online and that I’m not entirely interested in meeting digital friends. So for me, the novelty of a new game and primal competition can keep me satisfied for maybe month, but as soon as I pick up a newer game I have no interest in returning to the never-ending massacre that I had been contributing to. How can developers change this behavior?

The shooting in MAG definitely looks more solid than I initially thought it would, and I love the command structure, but the visual fidelity of Modern Warfare 2 blows this out of the water. I know they’re two different games and graphics don’t really matter all that much when you’re shooting too fast to see anything, but it really is a dire difference. Maybe the next Call of Duty will adopt the command structure….hey, I can hope.

Firstly, I’d like to say that I’ve always been in love with the idea of this game. Structured 256 player battles with chains of command sounds like the pinnacle of competitive shooters. But I’ve always held reservations about the game being too generic or having sloppy shooting. Based on the video in this interview though, the gameplay looks as tight as the rest of the AAA shooters out there and while still sporting the typical military simulation skin of so many other games, the visuals do look a tad more lively than I had expected. With Sony’s PS3 exclusive set to go into Beta in the coming weeks, things are looking good for MAG.
Author: CodyTrailers: Enjoy this MAG trailer with very little gameplay
I’d appreciate it if they cut all the drama-building for a multiplayer-only game and just show me some tight gameplay. But hey, you guys might enjoy it. Hence, the posting…

GameSpot has confirmed today that Zipper Interactive’s PS3 exclusive MAG will be storming the beaches of retail come January 26th. The title is just one of many holiday delays this year, but it’s probably for the best considering how ambitious this title is.
Author: CodyE3 ’09: Finally, the full length demos you’ve been searching for
Christ, these things took a while to go up, but I’ve finally found some suitable stage demos that give ten minute tastes of all the hottest games. Forgive the terrible editing and annoying host in these videos, but that’s what I get for milking other sites for their content (thanks GameSpot!). If only I had the money to go to E3 and schedule stage demos with all the biggest developers…

Here’s more of those lovely trailers, demos, and videos that I know you all love. This time around we’ve got the MAG stage demo, The Last Guardian (AKA Project Trico) trailer, and a PSP Go hands on demo from the show floor.
Cody already showed us some gameplay footage from MAG in one of his video round-ups, but here’s the stage demo that was shown off by Zipper Interactive at Sony’s Press conference.
