Feature: InsaneBear’s 2010 Game of the Year

Not really sure what's going on with that trophy...
It’s that time of year again; that wonderful time when we place an arbitrary crown on a single video game for rising above all the rest and demonstrating what video games should be. But before we recap the year that was 2010, I’d first like to continue an InsaneBear tradition and re-evaluate 2009′s Game of the Year…Alright, and with that re-evaluation process completed, I’ve decided to amend the scores of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Borderlands from Good to Great and Great to Good, respectively. That said, Dragon Age: Origins retains the honors of GotY. It certainly has some interface problems and the combat is a little clunky, but the world and cast of characters are sublimely rich and the Origin stories are a thing of beauty. Few games have allowed me to embrace real role-playing so readily, and for that, Dragon Age: Origins lives on in my mind. Let’s just hope the sequel is as good.

With reboots being all the rage these days and so many beloved video game franchises lying dormant for one reason or another, it can be fun (and painful) to imagine what series they’ll dig up next and rearm for the HD generation. A lot of times rebooting a very old series fails miserably, whether it’s because of the 2D to 3D transition or the simple fact that what was fun 20 years ago might not be all that fun today. But sometimes reboots take place without a hitch and we get games like Resident Evil 4.

Score: Good
Difficulty played on: Special Agent (middle difficulty)
Time to beat: Around 10 hours
Loved the most: The fact that this game is still innovative 10 years after its initial release. The music was superb too.
Hated the most: The online multiplayer component is completely mishandled and underwhelming.
As some of you may know, Perfect Dark has long held the honor of being my all-time favorite game. Lately I’ve been leaning more towards BioShock for that title, but the adventures of Joanna Dark are still high on my list. And while I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reliving them with the Xbox Live Arcade remake, seeing how poorly this game has aged in comparison to Halo: Combat Evolved, which came out just one year after Perfect Dark, has rubbed some of the nostalgia away. Rare’s spiritual successor to GoldenEye may have been a revolutionary classic in 2000, and in some respects it still is today, but the overall experience is bogged down by dated design methods.

Oh, sorry, wrong image...
It’s actually that other, better N64 classic that’ll be hitting the Xbox Live Arcade in less than a month. And I stand by this story’s title, as the sweet nectar that is Perfect Dark had more features 10 years ago than nearly every FPS does today. Throw in 8-player online battles, while retaining 4-player split-screen and face-lifting the graphics all for the low, low price of $10…oh, baby. The only thing that could disappoint about this package is the heavy auto-aim that will feel very different from today’s standards, but I’ve prepared myself for that. This is like the second coming…do you think Jesus will return with updated modern features and abilities?

I am so tickled that they left Counter-Op in. Jesus, this game warms my body.

Sweet salvation.
1UP is reporting that Microsoft’s Major Larry Nelson has tweeted confirmation of the N64 classic Perfect Dark for Xbox Live Arcade. The game will be coming this winter and a free picture pack was released today in celebration. Seems like something Microsoft might have wanted to mention during their press conference.

Kotaku‘s reporting what could either be the most awesome or most crushing rumor of the year for me with the implication of a Xbox Live Arcade port of Rare’s N64 classic, Perfect Dark. If you’ve seen the About Cody page then you know that Perfect Dark is my all-time favorite game. GoldenEye may have broke the console FPS barrier, but Perfect Dark took everything that game did an did it better. It set standards for console shooters that still haven’t completely been surpassed, and I would gladly pay $15 to play this classic over Xbox Live.
