Feature: Minority characters in video games

Study conducted by Dmitri Williams at the University of Southern California (2006 sales figures).
Okay, so let’s get this out of the way right now; I am not on some misguided racial crusade to take down the inherently racist and evil white man, because, despite what some of your more liberal politicians might want you to believe, white people aren’t all that bad. In fact, we have a pretty rich history of story-telling. And it is from that perspective, one of appreciating good narratives, that I am appalled by the gross underrepresentation of minority characters in video games. I don’t want to play as a Latino protagonist just so Latinos can feel warm and fuzzy about being a part of video games, I want to play as a Latino protagonist because I think they have stories to tell that bald white dudes don’t, just as bald white dudes have stories that fully-haired black guys don’t.

Alright, we better all just come to terms with it now. Grand Theft Auto V is happening, folks. I know, it’s a hard pill to swallow, but given the rumors that have been trickling out over the past few months, plus this fresh new piece of rumor from Gamespot, we all need to just accept the unavoidable conclusion.
Author: RyanReactions: Next GTA codenamed Rush?

It has come to my attention that some people still care about Grand Theft Auto even after the snore-fest that was GTA IV. I get that Rockstar writes better than anybody in the industry, but if there’s no fun gameplay to go with it then I may as well just go watch a movie. Anyways, in the event that you like to stretch your crime dramas into 40 hour epics, you might be interested in Grand Theft Auto V, which hasn’t been officially acknowledged but is almost certainly being developed as we speak.
Author: CodyReactions: Is Activision looking to acquire Take-Two?

Were you so glad to hear that Activision had milked the Guitar Hero franchise for everything it was worth before unceremoniously killing it off that you thought to yourself, “Hey, self, wouldn’t it be great if Activision could do the same to some of the industry’s most respected franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and BioShock?”
Author: CodyTrailers: L.A. Noire documentary
Sorry, I meant trailer. The narrator’s voice can make it a little confusing, but I guess Rockstar must have attributed Red Dead Redemption‘s staggering sales to its History Channel style marketing (remember?) campaign and they’re logically assuming it’s the key to L.A. Noire‘s success as well.
Author: CodyReactions: Portal 2, Max Payne 3 delayed to 2011

Perhaps the portals effect time now...hey, it explains the delay!
And you thought 2009 was the year of the game delay! We’re not even to E3 yet and high profile games are already getting pushed back to next year. But yeah, I’d love to sugar coat this bad news with some good reason, but there’s really only one way to put it–both games are delayed, deal with it. Let’s just hope that the delays make them better games. Maybe it’s finally dawned on Valve that they’re terrible people for releasing four separate games since Episode 2 and they’re going to put Portal 2 on the back burner until Episode 3 is finished…that, or they could just be gearing up to put out Left 4 Dead 3 by November.
Author: CodyReactions: Let the E3 rumors begin

Get a new logo, please.
I always hate this time of year because it’s always flooded with the opposite of news stories. You know, headlines like “Portal 2 E3 Event Canceled, Replaced By ‘Surprise’” or “Rockstar steps down E3 plans.” So I’m not actually reporting news, I’m reporting not news, wild rumors and speculation, red herrings that will never come to light. But some people like announcements of announcements (at least Kojima isn’t doing another countdown this year), so I guess I’ll report them.
Author: CodyTrailers: Max Payne 3 trailer leaked?
Rockstar hasn’t confirmed whether or not this leaked trailer is official, but the production values certainly look professional. Although the “Coming winter 2009″ and the timer thing in the corner make me think that this is an internal trailer from a while back that was never intended to see the light of day. As far as I know, Max Payne 3 isn’t coming out until at least Spring 2010. Trailer looks cool though.

So pretty much, “The Ballad of Gay Tony” is going to have some new weapons and a sweet helicopter. I’m sure somebody out there cares.
Author: CodyTrailers: And the Ballad of Gay Tony hype train begins
The second trailer for the downloadable episode in the past week or so. A big fat “meh” for me. I hope they don’t start flooding the internet with insubstantial trailers like Batman: Arkham Asylum did.
