Feature: Video games’ 15 all-time best opening levels

Pretty memorable first level, right?

So, as I was researching this list, I was filled with a desperate urge to replay (or play) every one of these games. That’s what a great opening level will do for you. No sitting through boring tutorials, no unnecessary exposition; just cut right to the heart of the game and never look back. Now due to the nature of this list, open-world games are severely lacking here (but not completely absent!). And whether it’s because game design has gotten better over the years or because “you just had to be there” to fully appreciate a game’s innovations, this list is largely populated by modern titles (sorry, Super Mario 64). Now I’ll acknowledge the irony of this mundane intro and let you get to that list!

Trailers: Check out one of the greatest games of all time in HD

I like to imagine that the Japanese text is saying things like, “Murder innocent colossi in more crisp detail than ever before!” That’s the sort of motto marketing departments go for, right? Anyways, jump past the break to see an equally gorgeous trailer for the Ico half of the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection, due out September 27th for the PS3.

Reactions: Team ICO collection leaked?

Anybody who’s looked for the PS2 cult-classic Ico knows how expensive and hard to secure it can be. Just as revered (if not more so) and easier to obtain was Team ICO’s next endeavor, Shadow of the Colossus. While legions of loyal fans are patiently awaiting the developer’s next title, The Last Guardian, there is still plenty of demand for the older masterpieces.

Feature: Getting to the game late

Since coming to college two weeks ago I’ve come to realize that not many people share my passion for video games, or if they do, they’re doing a very good job of hiding it. It’s understandable, though–games still tend to be viewed as childish toys by the general public. But even those who acknowledge the average age of gamers (32 as of 2010) still assume video games to be a strictly male pastime. To be fair, adolescent male power-fantasies do make up the majority of content out there, but there is so much more that the masses just don’t know about. So my question, as a person with a passion for video games (and someone who is hoping to garner some more readers for this here website), is “How should gaming veterans go about introducing the uninitiated to this world we love?”

Our Adventures: Shadow of the Colossus

You know those games that you look back on and you know you should have played them, but for one reason or another, you just never got around to it? Shadow of the Colossus was one of those games for me, although I had managed to play a few of the 16 bosses here and there over the years. But that’s not how games should be experienced. Games should be experienced in epic 11 hour marathons with your best bud! Actually, that’s probably not the best setting to experience a game in for the first time, but Ryan and I went ahead and did it anyways. I thought you guys might like to hear some of my thoughts on the game and maybe even stir up a conversation. I’ll try to be brief though.

Feature: Top 10 most visually striking video games

Not this.

Not this.

With Halloween coming up on us in just a week, I figured now would be as good a time as any to examine the best costumes in video games. What I mean by that is that I’m looking at the games that play dress-up–the ones that forgo tried and true photo-realism for bolder art styles. A perfect example of this is illustrated by a game I’ve been playing religiously for the past week.

Reactions: Team ICO’s mystery PS3 exclusive leaked?

Kotaku has gotten word of a recently leaked trailer code named “Project TRICO.” Remembering that Shadow of the Colossus was originally code named “Project NICO,” it isn’t really a stretch of the imagination to assume this game is the third entry in the ICO universe. Pair that with the signature art direction of Fumito Ueda’s team and the fact that the apparent protagonist of the trailer looks so similar to the protagonist of ICO, and it seems more than likely that this is legit. Guess the big E3 surprise got out a little early.

Reactions: Shadow of the Colossus Becoming Movie, Apocalypse Nigh

We can only hope it remotely resembles this.

We can only hope it remotely resembles this.

Yup, that’s right. Yet another video game movie. You think Hollywood would start to realize that these things are very rarely successful, or any good at all. Especially after Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li bombed at the box office. But, nope, Sony even decided to go ahead and hire the same writer (if he can even be described as such) that wrote The Legend of Chun Li. So it’s not looking too good for a big screen adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. Not that anyone that was remotely interested in the game even wanted to see it made into a movie. Here’s hoping this gets scrapped before it even gets close to release.
