Reactions: Starcraft II expansion 18 months away?

We’ve known from the start that Starcraft II would ship in three separate editions with each offering a campaign unique to one of the game’s three factions. Wings of Liberty detailed the human exploits back in July, and Blizzard’s Battle.net project director Greg Canessa may have let slip the release window for the Zerg faction’s time in the spotlight. In a Q & A session following Canessa’s presentation at the GDC Online event, a question dealing with future Battle.net features such as trading replays, broadcasting replays, and upgrading profiles prompted Canessa to mention the Zerg expansion, Heart of the Swarm. “[They are] a main area of focus we’re going to be seeing on the Starcraft side over the next 18 months between now and Heart of the Swarm.”

So apparently this commercial debuted during the NBA finals the other night (does anybody here even know who’s playing?). I wonder how many casual gamers will be tricked into thinking Starcraft II is a sci-fi shooter?

We got a long one this week, so I won’t keep you too long. We had two special guests this week so there’s lots of good discussion. In between all of that wonderful discussion we found time to talk about the news (more delays! DLC!), cheat codes in games today, and what we’ve been playing (go play the Batman demo). Enjoy!

In what can only be considered official confirmation of 2009 being an unfashionable year to release games, yet another AAA title has jumped ship to 2010. As part of its April-June earnings report, Activision-Blizzard has announced that Star Craft II: Wings of Liberty will not be taking flight until sometime in the first half of 2010. The culprit behind the delay is said to be the desire to release the title along side the company’s new and improved Battle.net service. And I thought it was bad when said service was just getting in the way of LANs in the name of anti-piracy.

I hope everybody had a great independence day weekend. We sure had a great time recording this podcast on the Fourth for all of you to enjoy. Listen in as we talk about Starcraft II not supporting LANs (and the obligatory petition to get support), No More Heroes no longer on the Wii, various PS3 and 360 rumors, and the demise of The Pirate Bay as we know it. But wait! There’s more. We test out a new segment that is essentially an exercise in creativity. We think you’ll find it entertaining.
