So I’ve been playing a lot of Assassin’s Creed II this past week, and as you might know, it’s got me thinking about game genres and what defines them. It seems that the lines between genres are becoming less and less defined these days, but there’s still a pretty stark difference despite the blending. So let’s start off by taking a look at what traditionally defines the major genres of today’s market.

Reactions: Why is Red Faction: Guerrilla a Third Person Shooter, again?

That’s a good question. One that has finally been answered by the producer of the game, Rick White, while speaking to 1up. After the first two games were from the first person perspective, many people wondered why Volition would change a winning formula. Apparently, Mr. White just did not think that the perspective was any fun. “I came into the picture without really the history of Red Faction so it easy for me to say I’m just not seeing why it’s fun, guys, it’s just not making any sense to me. So let’s just pull it back and see what happens. I took a lot of flack for that.” White also says that usability tests were showing a high level of frustration from that view point as well. “Players [were] getting frustrated in usability testing because in first person you just didn’t have that POV [point of view]– you’re constantly dying and you didn’t know why were dying. So what we did was we pulled that camera back and it kind of changed the vision and dynamics of that game at that point.”
