Review: Stacking

Score: Mediocre
Difficulty played on: No difficulty options
Time to beat: 7 hours for close to 100% completion
Loved the most: Unique and consistent aesthetic direction.
Hated the most: Either the utter lack of anything remotely funny (coming from Double Fine!) or the most annoying title screen music I’ve ever heard.
Hot of the (roller) heels of October’s delightful Costume Quest, Tim Schafer’s Double Fine Studios has released one of the most aesthetically original games in the history of the industry with Stacking, a game based on Russian Matryoshka dolls. The gamble pays off with one of the most authentic and quirky game-worlds you’ll ever occupy, but unlike the developer’s previous foray into the downloadable market, Stacking just doesn’t have enough fun or funny to support the unique world. Simply put, this title doesn’t “stack up” to the Double Fine standard we’ve come to know, and it has me sincerely concerned for the quality of their next game.

So before we get to the new news, I thought I’d just remind everyone that Double Fine’s downloadable title Stacking goes on sale tomorrow for $15, and if my excitement hasn’t been enough to goad you into buying it, then maybe this glowing review from 1UP will get your inner doll-lover (oh, yes, we all know) rustling.

I definitely like the idea of assigning special missions to the highest performing players, although this interview didn’t really go into depth on what those missions will entail. Hopefully they force the selected players to move around and expose themselves a little on the way to objectives instead of just asking them to kill more enemies. It could be a great way to get rid of camping. I also think that everybody would be much more receptive to capturing an occupied White Castle than some random flag in the middle of a battlefield.

It certainly looks like we’ll never be lacking fun and creative tools of destruction in Volition’s latest. Let’s just hope there’s a multiplayer version of baseball involving the magnet gun, sledgehammer, and “iron man” Cal Ripkin Jr.

In what’s essentially become par for the course, Microsoft has landed another batch of exclusive multiplayer maps for a big time (okay, maybe Homefront‘s not “big time,” but I want it to be) Military Shooter. To clarify, the 360 version of THQ’s story-driven FPS will ship with a map not available to PS3 or PC gamers. This map, titled “Suburb,” likely takes place in a suburb. But a suburb of where!?! That’s how they rope you in…anyways, in addition to that single launch map, 360 gamers will also get first crack at all DLC map-packs, as Microsoft has secured timed exclusives on those. Looks like PS3 gamers will just have to suffer everyday life while they wait for the Korean occupation to expand to their back yards.

And not because of Kaos Studios’ perspective on war and characters, but because I’m just so entertained by wood-folk who’ve been stocking up on ammo for years in the hope of an invasion on American soil. That Rianna chick looks like she’s about ready to gut those Koreans and serve their innards to her hunting dogs. What a patriot!

What Mr. Lee isn’t saying is that the story is secretly a metaphor for the no-names in the Double Fine family triumphing over Tim Schafer’s tyrannical rule and finally expressing themselves. What, a guy who called Bobby Kotick a “total prick” can’t be an industrial villain who lords over his underlings with an iron fist?

Due out sometime in 2013, the famed director’s gaming debut will be a “Horror Adventure Title.” I’m already horrified at the prospect of a three-year marketing campaign.

Despite the fact that a studio I’ve never heard of is developing it and THQ is publishing it, everything I’ve seen of Homefront makes me think it’s going to be a good game. As far as the multiplayer ideas go, it doesn’t look like they’re really presenting anything new, but they’re putting things together in their own way that looks quite enjoyable.
