Feature: The game development dream team

Like this, but with less athletic ability.

What if by some dark, unspeakable magics contractual obligations ceased to exist and every game developer in the industry was suddenly free to work with whomever he or she pleased? What if the stars aligned and money wasn’t an issue and a development “dream team” descended from the heavens? What would it look like? What would its name be? Could we even play one of Valizzard’s (working title) games without our minds exploding from the awesomenesss?

Random: Tim Schafer, cookies, and brains

Notice how the brains connect these two wacky videos. Funny voices are also a common theme. I’ve decided that there’s so much in common that Mr. Schafer should probably direct the next New Vegas DLC and center it around Sesame Street.

Reactions: Could Psychonauts be getting a downloadable HD remake?

Well, Tim Schafer’s Double Fine Studios recently acquired the publishing rights to the 2005 classic, which is certainly a step in that direction. In an email to Gamasutra, Schafer said, “It’s true the publishing rights have reverted to Double Fine, but there are some more deals that need to be worked out and contracts that need signing before that actually means anything, financially. After that’s all squared away, we will have some fun stuff to announce! (And no, it’s not Psychonauts 2.)”

Trailers: Get the scoop on the origins of Stacking

What Mr. Lee isn’t saying is that the story is secretly a metaphor for the no-names in the Double Fine family triumphing over Tim Schafer’s tyrannical rule and finally expressing themselves. What, a guy who called Bobby Kotick a “total prick” can’t be an industrial villain who lords over his underlings with an iron fist?

Reactions: Tim Schafer “ready to do” Psychonauts 2

In a recent interview with PSM3 (via CVG), Double Fine head Tim Schafer was asked about the possibility of a sequel to cult-classic Psychonauts. “I’m ready to do it. I’d love to do it,” he responded. “It’s really a question of getting a publisher who’s interested in doing it.”

Reactions: Ron Gilbert feeling Double Fine after reuniting with Tim Schafer

So you know how everybody looks back on the early ’90′s Lucasarts adventure games as the golden age of comedy for games? You know how Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert pretty much single-handledly built that reputation when they worked together? Well, maybe you can see where I’m going with this.

Reactions: Double Fine’s Costume Quest is full of win

Remember when Tim Schafer said that his studio was working on four indie-style games instead of the traditional AAA endeavor? Well, 1UP recently broke the news on the first of these ambitious little titles. Titled Costume Quest, it’s an adventure/RPG published by THQ and scheduled for a Fall release on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Reactions: Tim Schafer and Double Fine working on 4 “indie-style” games

First off, if you want to know what that awesome picture is all about, go read this lovely article at Kotaku. But onto the news! At the recent Develop 2010 Conference, legendary game developer Tim Schafer had a few words to say. Of interest to us, the man behind Grim Fandango and Psychonauts talked about how EA decided not to go ahead with a sequel to last year’s heavy-metal adventure Brutal Legend, and in turn, Double Fine decided to move away from AAA games and into smaller, “indie-style” games.

Trailers: Watch the opening cinematic of Brutal Legend

The comedy certainly seems to be hitting all the right notes, I just hope the rest of the game can match up. Oh, and, it’d be nice to hear some real metal within the first five minutes of the game. I feel like I should like this game, but it’s just not hooking me. I think I’ll consider a rental though. You should too!
