video games
InsaneBear’s 2 year anniversary!

It’s sort of hard to believe, but today marks this website’s two-year anniversary. It’s certainly seen some ups and downs since Ryan and I started it up back in 2009, but the important thing is that it never stopped regurgitating news or providing substantial rants reviews for you, dear readers. And we certainly appreciate your continuing support! Jacob has asked me to assure everybody that your loyalty will be rewarded; our plans for world domination have been progressing nicely and our most devout readers should all be receiving their private islands very soon (that’s in bear years, though, and the conversion calculations can get very complicated).
Feature: Defining video games as a medium

Is the art in what the developers are saying to us, or what we're saying about ourselves?
It might be stating the obvious, but video games are not movies. They are not books. They are not songs. Video games belong to a distinct medium with its own strengths and weaknesses. As I’ve been studying the origins of avant-garde film the past few months, I’ve been faced with this question of how a medium defines itself and celebrates its uniqueness. I think it’s worth looking at what sets interactive entertainment apart and how video games do or don’t embrace that.
Author: CodyFeature: In the year 2010…

Maybe Nintendo will finally make sense of this in 2010. Maybe...
So I’ve put Dragon Age: Origins down long enough for all the other humans to tell me about this new year that’s on the way. Being the logical person that I am (and one who is most certainly not taking orders from an insane bear), I figured I’d judgmentally look back on 2009 this Saturday, once we’ve officially moved into the new year and had enough recovery time to write a Game of the Year feature. But for today, it’s still 2009, so it only seems appropriate to hopefully gaze ahead to the coming year and build expectations that will only be shattered. Such is life. That’s why we have cheesy New Year’s resolutions that try to compensate for last year’s disappointments. But we’re not to that point yet! For now, let’s just focus on all the goodness that 2010 can bring.
Author: CodyFeature: 7 things video games could learn from the NFL

As some of you may know by now, the 2009 NFL football season started this past Thursday. Given how insanely profitable and recognized the NFL product is, I figured it’d be interesting to see if our own industry can learn anything from the most popular sports league in America. And while this list certainly has its share of business and growth suggestions, there are also ideas on here that are purely in the interest of improving the game, if you will. So without further ado, I give you seven things video games could learn from the NFL.
Author: CodyFeature: Top 5 pre-1970 films that should be made into a video game

It's a match made in Heaven!
Continuing our recent fascination with film here at InsaneBear, I figured I’d compile a little list of some of the movies I’d like to see turned into video games. But upon realizing that I wouldn’t know where to start with such a broad topic, I decided to narrow it down to films that were released before 1970. Why 1970 you ask? Well, it really seems like the root of pop-culture can be traced back to the ’70′s and onward, at least for movies. What that means is that there are way too many good post-1970 movies to make a coherent list out of. Plus, you’ll get to hear about some movies you probably haven’t seen before.

"These are not the bloggers you are looking for." - Kotaku
So I’m going to kind of lay E3 2009 to rest here with a round up of the best looking games coming to a console near you in the year 2009. Sorry Mass Effect 2. You may be the best looking game of an absolutely ridiculous looking 2010, but this list is for games we’ll actually be able to get our hands on relatively soon.
Author: CodyFeature: What Makes a Video Game Fun?

They're having fun. But why?
Video games. We know ‘em, we love ‘em. We spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars every year in order to own all of the best titles. Sometimes we are disappointed, but, many times, our discerning tastes are able to weed out the garbage and find those truly great games. But what is it that makes those games great? What is it about those games that makes us want to spend more on them rather than donate that money to starving children? Well, that’s probably a discussion for another time… but, you want to know what it is that makes those games great? They are fun. Plain and simple. We enjoy playing them.
